Whitey. as it turns out, missed a check, moving everyone else up a notch. I I I I I I T'e It started out th e usual way with some 700 entries blasting their way to the smoke over rough, choppy ground, and J.N. Roberts second at the end of a couple miles. Stuntman Duffy Hambleton of the Viewfinders was fIrSt, but that didn't last long. Roberts and Poteet got around him and Martino was catching up fast. Roberts and Poteet staged their own private duel until Poteet smashed his peg on a rock. End of duel Martino got by Duffy and that's how they came into the noon check.. By this time J.N. was only ahead by 4 minutes. We already saw how the 2nd loop came out. J.N.. , the first with the most (ebecks that is) was first, Whitey was disqualified, and in his place was Larry Pfutzenreuter who managed to get by Duffy on the second loop. Duffy was third with a flat front tire. When it was all over, Whitey said "I lost the trail a couple times but 1 though I got all the checks..... All but No.5, Whitey. J.N. said, "The course was too tight and twisty to be run in virgin territory. The lime was bad and 1 missed a lot of turns and 1 had to come back and pick up the ribbon. But 1 managed to pick up the course every time I lost it. Also, the danger marks were too close to the danger."
