VOLUME VIII NUMBER 16 May 4, 1971 PRICE THIRTY CENTS Nat'l To Kel ATLANTA, GA., April 24-25, 1971 - Kel Carruthers powered his way to the 250cc combined Junior/Expert 50-mile road race on Saturday and this proved to be just an omen of th ings to come on Sunday during the 125-Mile AMA National Road Race at Road Atlanta. Kel became the first foreigner to win an AMA National Road Race by holding off Daytona winner, Dick Mann. Mann's performance, however, was good enough to move him into the number one spot in the AMA Grand National Points race. Jim Odom slipped to second as he finished at the tail end of the first dozen receiving the checkered. A fu II report on the th ree road races as well as the opening event of the Spring-AMA motocross series can be found on page 16-17. Dunes MX VALENCIA, CAL., April 25, 1971 - For the second consecutive week, most of the big names in motocross turned up at Indian Dunes. Last week it was the Grand Prix and this week was AMXT Benefit which offered a $1000 purse. Some real tight racing took place in the Expert classes with Bob Grossi, Mark Blackwell and Bill Clements doing most of the showing. The overall winner in both the 250 and Open classes was...take a guess. (Hint; he's won the big ones for the past severa'i weeks.) Times up - Clements. Read how he did it on page 6. Beautiful Road Atlanta was the site for this weekend's AMA 125-Mile National Championship Road Race. Filled with curves, the speeds wer-e reduced to approximately 90 mph for the big bikes. The finest road racers in the nation competed and her-e Cal . Rayborn holds down the lead.
