ISDT EFFORT TO BE BASED
ON AMA ENDURO
The most prestigious motorcycling
event in the workd is the International
Six Days Trial. This serious competition
that holds major political importance
throughout Europe. This year's ISDT
will be hosted by England's FIM
affiliate, the Auto-Cycle Union, on the
Isle of Man September 20th through
25th.
American efforts will be handled this
year for the first time by AMA. A
United States Trial series is being
organized by the AMA Department of
Amateur Activities. The series is
intended to ph ysicall y prepare
American riders for the varied terrain of
the Isle of Man and provide a
qualification method to choose the six
men who will ride on the important
United State Trophy Team.
With help from the motorcycle
industry, the AMA hopes to totarry
finance ·this Trophy Team effort.
Depending upon the success of the
National Trophy Team program,
attention will be given next to the
four-man A and B teams. In addition,
three-man Manufacturer Teams and
Club Teams from the U.S.,, will be
supported by AMA to every extent
possible.
U.S. qualification trials will be held
in six different areas of the country.
Two and three-day trials have been
organized in Ohio by the Alexander
Competition Club and in Oregon by the
Motorcycle Acitivities Club.
Addition'll events are being
considered in Missouri, Wisconsin, New
Jersey, and California. Throughout the
ranks of the AMA, voluntary financial
support is already beginning. For
example, the Midwest National Enduro
Riders Association have donated fifty
cents per entry from their 150 Mile
National Championship Enduro to be
held at Shelby, Indiana May 2nd.
Questions concerning support of the
U.S. effort should be addressed to the
attention of Mike Vancil, AMA Director
of Amateur Activities, Box 231,
Worthington, Ohi~ 43085.
SILENCER DISCOUNT
Two District 35 motocross point
runs, each sponsored by the Lompoc
Slo-Pokes M.C., will have a 50 cent
discount on post entry for all riders if
their motorcycles are equipped with a
silencer. The regular post fee (without.
silencer) is $3.50 and the dates for the
events are May, 16 and 30. Check
Calendar for more details.

We had some of our grapevines
staked out at the Viewfinders Grand
Prix as we couldn't make it this year
due to being involved with the Cycle
World Show. We heard some dandy tales
about that downhill with the pipe down
the center! Whee!
One thing we've been kicking around
in the old head for a wh'ile is for clubs
throwing Grand Prix to either limit
them to Juniors and Experts only or to
include Novices who can prove they
have competition experience. The Dirt
Diggers tried this and it stopped those
pile-ups they used to have, especially in
the 250 class going into turn one... or I
should say, cut 'em dpwn a bit. I don't
believe anyone h ... the righ t to ride a
Grand Prix as his (or her) first race.
Injury records prove that many of the
riders hurt are out for the first time.
Through personal connections I
know of one chap who was always a real
good trailer, went out with his racing
buddies, kept up with them, etc., and
signed up for Elsinore. He also had two
of his pals who hadn't raced before sign
up too, "It'll be fun." I t was. As all of
us have found out, racing is not trailing,
and you'd better know what you're
doing when the fast riders start catching
up. In this case the chap got hung up in
traffic, panicked because he didn't
know whether to stay in the groove or
move when he heard another coming up
behind him. He finally ended up in the
bushes with a broken leg. Great start to
a racing career.
We also heard with a bit of glee we
migh t add, that one of our top ranked
riders was on the line awaiting the
dead-engine start with his engine
running and his foot neatly over the
pipe so it wasn't making too much
noise. If this rumor is true, the
Competition Committee will take care

of it as apparently plenty of people saw
it and told about it.
While all the excitement was going
on at the Dunes, we we,re up at the
S\?orts Arena looking at the wealth of
goodies...bet every kid that went in
there wanted that gorgeous little replica
of the Mon tesa Cota. Word is they just
migh t be built for sale. Then there was a
mini-chopper that was out of sight;
Mike Parti's finally completed Excelsior
s ide-hack about which he claims
horrendous speeds (but, knowing him, I
don't doubt it), plus all the rest of the
goodies..
It did seem this year, though, that
the manufacturers had nothing new to
show. In years gone it was in this show
that we all got the first look at the big
Bultaco and the AJS Stormer, not to
mention the Rickman super-goodies. Oh
well.
In 1971, District 37 will add one
more steward to the Competition
Commi ttee. The Ugh tweight Desert
Division will be broken into two
sections, Div. I, 176-250cc and Div. II,
101-175cc. This just had to be done, the
work load is enormous in that class. The
European scrambles will have dual
loops, too, with nothing but Novices
tearing around on .one and the
Junior-Experts on the other.
May I remind all of you, wherever
you ride, try and cooperate with
everyone and every rule whether it
sticks in your craw or not. Because,
what good is it with a new desert
steward issuing numbers, or you
planning on riding an enduro in the
forest when there is no place to ride?
Please, help the cause.
