M .. ... & By Bill Spener SACRAMENTO, CAL., April 23, 1971 - On another cool evening, 700 new fans boullht tickets for the second running of the State Capitol short track series. The new numbers, combined with the rain date crowd of nearly a thousand, made a full gallery and they were treated to some of the best short track racing ever seen. After 10 qualifying heats, 4 heat races, 2 semi's, a consolation and a 15 lap main, local favorite Joe Henry came out on top. Shit short track specialist won it all: his heat (the fastest), the semi (also the fastest) and then leading from lap 6 until the checkered. Joe Henry was the s.ensation at the first running of the Yamaha Silver Cup when he was on the pole for the main event and except for a little bobble, led Jim Odom around the slippery concrete Long Beach arean to rmish second. In Madison Square he copped a special event set up to add to the attraction. Second pl~ce went to Bob Scally who was closing fast at th e end and third to Novice Mike O.Brien. Teh start of the main saw Novice Gary Lozano take the lead only to have a restart called when Carlo Lucia feU down the front straight. It took a few minutes to get ready and meanwhile, Terry Sage headed for the pits for some work. When he got back Lozano had mechanical difficulties and after some time he was taken off the grid and had to sit it out. A tough break. Sage's work was naught also as he couldn't survive for more than a few laps. Whatever darnalte Lucia sustained. it , .... On the sixth go-round, Henry took command and fled the scene. Yam worked his way to the back of the pack and Lucia succumbed to mechanical woes. Fast track conditions led to problems early in the day with many get-offs, mainly due to the inexperienced new riders. John Green was taken away when he feU and was run over by another rider. It's worth the drive up there just for that breakfast. The Polka Dots reportedly had rew problems with the run. They put as much of it as possible on private land to avoid hassles with an increasingly uncooperative Forest "Service". There was only one injury reported, an astrounding record considering the difficulty of some of the terrain. Even though the weather was grey and rainy a great part of the day, the beauty of the country couldn't be hidden and most of the riders that I talked ~o mentioned how much they enjoyed riding through the beautiful countryside. It adds an appreciated extra dimension to the traditional challenge. (Results on page 24) • .aJa Wins again! We take a break in the high country to let the watch catch up.
