~ Ol eIe successfully bucks Viewfin ers By John Shedd .& <{ ~ w Z W ...J U >- U IRVINE, CAL., April 18,1971 - With the Viewfinders Grand Prix on the same day, no one thought that the CMC motocross at SaddIeback Park would have a big turnout; but it was quite the opposite. The en tries soared way over 300 and a total of 14 classes and divisions provided the day's racing program with 42 events. Top riders such as Tom Rapp, Mark Blackwell, Pat deBenedetti, Chuck Minert. and Jim Wilson passed up the Grand Prix for the Cl\lC action, and they provided plenty of it. Pat deBenedetti had some problems keeping the chain on his 125cc Penton for several weeks and every time he would get going he would lose it and sit on the sidelines and walch friend and competitor Bill Urban take the win. This Sunday things were different. Urban blew his engine on Saturday, and Pat solved his chain problem by pu tting on a new swingarm. Chuck Minen holds off the hard pressing Maico of Gary Chaplin. Tom Rapp took top honors in the 250 class. In all three 125cc Expert motos Pat had to come from behind to take over the lead. Once out in front no one could match his pace. Pat won the fltst two motos without anyone giving him much of a race, but in the last leg he had a hang·up in the next to the last lap and Jim Beachamp wheeled his DKW into the lead and Pat had to settle for second. Bob Fisk, who was just recently moved up to Expert status, gave Rapp and Wilson a hard way 10 go in the 250cc Expert class. Fisk gal good starts in each mota, and Rapp and Wilson had to work to move in front. Rapp bullied his Taco ahead in all three motos a make a clean sweep, and Fisk managed to beat out Wilson for second. Blackwell won all three of the 500cc Expert matos, but it looked like Chuck Mintert was going to win the last one. In the first leg Mark had deBenedeni, Minert and Wilson after his hide, but deBenedetli blew a gear box and Blackwell beat Wilson and Minert for the win. In the second mota Mark took the lead from Wilson on the second lap and took an easy win. (Results on page 22} In the last, Mark got a bad start and it looked like Minert would take the win even if he did have his hands full with Gary Chaplin from Morro Bay, Calif., but Mark took over on the last lap to win. The Saddleback course had taken on a new look and everyone seemed to like it. The new course criss-crossed over some of the old course, and several high·bermed comers became jumps diagonally across the straigh ts. The wind kept the dust blown away, and th~ sun never did make up its mind if it should shine or hide behind the clouds.
