Pleasant High is easily reached from Hwy. 101 by driving East on Santa Clara St. to White. Turn left and the school gym is a Y2 mile on the left. RAIN CHASERS CATCH IT By N.A. Williams CLACKAMAS, ORE., March 28, 1971 - The mud didn't go away nor did the rain, but some of the riden did. The turnout (36) was smaller than at the last race but the enthusiasm was just as good. Although there was two heats of 100cc and 500cc riden at the start of the day, enough dropped out to run just one main in each of these. The 200cc class motocross had only three riden to finish the last leg and the 250cc class moto had flye riders left. No beginnen or open bikes were present. Bill Ehrens took a double win with his Kawasaki in the 100cc class, showing much of his motocross style. Robby Ohge ,also had a double for the day as he topped the 200 and 250cc MX classes. Robby rides for Gordon Motors Monte.. and has been picking up a lot of trophies lately. Keith Dunn, Honda mounted also took home two first places. He took the 500cc Trophy Dash and Ill'st in the A Main. Dusty days show Brad at his best No, these aren't Brad Lackey and Dick Mann, but a hint of the action seen at Salinas. By Bill Spencer SALINAS, CAL, Mar. 28, 1971 - An overwhelming population of motocrossers and their families descended upon the Salinas Ramblers clubgrounds for their final run of the winter months. The cast of riders was by far the best of the four races put on this year. Brad Lackey brought in his 250cc C-Z for a workout and got a good one from the likes of Dick Mann, Chris Carter, Steve Marsh and Al Kenyon. While these guys were not all in contention at any specific time, they put on a whale of a show. In the Open class, Bob Grossi, again the champion, had no difficulty winning all three motos. Of course, neither did Lackey, or so it would seem. The I1I"st 250 Sr. moto was scheduled for ten laps. The course set out ~as used by the Inter-Am in the past. It IS run In reverse from the regular way and climbs up the hill just a little bit more before dropping back down and around to what used to be the old circuit. It's a real bear. The lack of winter rains made it a little more dusty than usual Lackey got off to a fine start working his way through the pack a!,d taking the lead on the flrst lap WIth Dick Mann close behind. Al Kenyon and Mark Muscio shared third real close to Bugs and then followed some 35 other Jrs. and Experts. Lackey increased his lead with every lap with Mann staying in there. II> Meanwhile Carter, a Junior, was working his way through the masses, until on lap six he went by 3rd place. Lap seven was the same and so was lap eigh t, with the better part of the troops all having taken at least one break. At this point it becomes somewhat confusing. The white flag went out and Lackey pulled over. To take a break? ot likely. Mann went by and so did Carter. Lackey, after some fiddling, was back in it. The race ran eleven laps and the question of who finished Ill'st was settled by the club when the previous lap was used for the official count. Winner, Lucky Lackey. Mann was awarded 769 points for the three motos and that made him second over Carter with 545. Carter won't be Junior ranked for long. Dick Mann won't be 36 for long either, this week we'll put him at 35. OK, Bugs? Right on. Grossi is still very powerful and deliberate. He didn't lead the Ill'St two motos from the start. He had to pass through a storm of Maico's in the first two, led by Gary Chaplin, all the way up from Morrow Bay. (Results on page 34) LACKEY TO EUROPE CZ factory rider Brad Lackey, who gained national prominence during last fall's Trans·AMA series, has been invited by the factory to visit the plant in Czechoslovakia. Lackey will leave the states April 12 and spend "from six weeks to six months" in Europe. The 17 -year-old Northern California star mayor may not start competing in Ehropean motocross events; it all depends upon how he responds to the class the CZ factory has set up for him. Meanwhile, Bryan Kenney, this season's AMXT captain, has left for Europe for a year's racing. H~ reports - that is, reports from hIS dog, Snowflake will begin appearing next week. a « ~ w Z w -' o > o Winter Scrambles' season champions show off their trophies presented March 21 by Mrs. Joyner. They are: Jim Curtis (l00ccl, Ron Denney (200cc), Bill Cook (250 & 360cc) and KeIth Dunn (Open), Cook had a rough time winning the 250cc class from Gary Kapus;, It took t~e final event's results to determine the champ. Kapus picked up fast time money In the day 5 Wear a Watch You Can See in the Next Enduro The question is, Is it better to wear a pocket watch on a string around your neck and risk hanging yourself on a passing busn, or use a wrist watch that you can't possibly see while you're. iIii:' _ flying over the toolies at 50 per? Now you can have the best of both worlds with a leather watch band that flts a pocket watch. Only $4.00 from J.T. Miles,8 Park Drive, N. Pekin, 111. 61554. A great idea. Scrambles upset CENTRALIA, WASH., March 27, 1971 - Word was put out several weeks in advance of today's Twin City Scrambles that extra trophies for the day's races would be given out as well as championship trophies to the top three positions in each class. It resulted in some harsh feelings. Some riders, who hadn't planned on riding, decided to do so with hopes of gettinR some of the brass. But, after a hard day's tour of the course, many left without waiting for the trophies. One thing, there weren't as many as expected and also they weren't as nice as the riders were led to believe. Even more upsetting was the points tabulation. No information could be obtained as to the system used, and many people believe the totals were incorrect.
