POINT LAVB TR Q. g ~ ~ .. ::; ~ w Z W ..J U >- U By DAve Brown Photos by Bob Rasmussen APPLE VALLEY, CAL., March 21, 1971 - 233 riders were greeted at Deadman's Point by an all new, improved, Lengthened and widened track. Russ Darnell stayed for the race on Sunday after his school on Saturday, and although he blew his gearbox in the first moto while leading, he enjoyed himself and was even heard to say that he felt, "Deadman's Point has the best-run and most well organized races in the United States!" The 100-125 Intermediate/Senior combined saw some of the hot action of the day. Jim Hoover on his Sachs seemed to have an edge on most of the competition. Although he lost a footpeg in the first moto, he still went on for a second. Jim won the second moto and was leading the third when his gear box started acting up. Dirk Wambold (Yam) managed three bad starts but did some fantastic cat-up riding to capture first overall. The 100 SEniors seems to go almost as fast as the 125's but they all played second to Frank Wilsford, Sr. Frank put three good motos together to capture top honors on his Hodaka, with Ed lrsik returning after an injury to take second on his Honda. Jim Hoover, astride his CZ, and Rex Staten (Ossa) were having some fantastic battles in· the 250-500 combined. Rex managed to keep his bike together in the second moto to outduel Jim for the win. The see-saw battle through this race had all the spectators on their feet. Rex had bike problems in the first and third moto which put him back to third for the day. Jim Hoover was right on Russ' tail in the first moto when Russ dropped out, giving Jim the win. . The third moto saw Jim pull out to a good lead and never get challenged to take first 250 Senior for the day. George Spellman managed some steady placing on his Ossa to take second. Mike Faulkner again stuck his Husky out in front of all the Intermediates and never look back, for a decisive first in the 250 Intermediate class. Charlie Smith was consstent on his Ossa to take second. The 500 Intermediate class fell to Chuck Bybee aboard a big 400 Maico. This was the AMXT Benefit race and a portion of the proceeds were turned over to Russ Darnell as the team representative by track promoter Bob Dresslar. This money, along with the money from the school, totaled about $375 dona ted to the American Moto-Cross Team. The next race at the Point will be on April 4. / \ l.. Russ Darnell pointed out a few hims in riding motocross in an AMXT benefit class on Saturday at the Poi nt. .. "'If Russ Darnells's Saturday m-x school certainly made Sunday's races more artistic.
