CYCLE WORLD SHOW DATES N By John rout Photo by Racing Photos VALENClA, CAL., March 21, 1971 Danny LaPorte, the young whirlwind who just recently got bored with his future prospects as a mini-bike racer, today rode his fifth moto on the big Indian Dunes course and turned back a classy field 0 f 100cc Juniors in a grandslam win effort. Danny, who was seemingly never in trouble, led all three of the motos for his group from flag to flag. The youngster's lead in the second- event as he turned the track in near record time for th e class, was close to a half a mile in front of Danny Sanchez (Hod) and Bryan McLeod (Bul) who were running 2nd and 3rd behind the leader at the finish. Steve Pinneri (Hod) garnered a couple of thirds on the day's activities. Jimmy West (Hus) did everything except pole vault over the tops of the distan t mo un tains as he came from behind after dropping a first moto win to Bill Clements (Hus) to gain the overall victory among the Open Seniors... Although the job was cut out for him, West opened the throttle slide to the complete stops and, while bouncing along the tops of the dirt banks and sailing full-bore from the front chute jumps, the red and silver racing machine was responsible for wins in the following class motos. Finishing in a tie for 2nd overall standings were Billy Clements and Tom Rapp on a "super-giant-of-a" 350cc Bultaco. In what was probably the wildest battle of the afternoon, that of the 125cc eniors, Bryar Holcomb on a Penton and Eddie Cole, astride a rapid Rickman, grabbed the center of the raceway to out-duel Jeff Wright (Ric) and Larry Shoemaker (Yam) during the running of the first moto for this bunch. However, that was not the way that the "overall" entered the record books. Wright bounced right back to score back to back wins in the next two races, and he was the rider that walked from the pay window with the full pockets for his day's work. Shoemaker, who rides out of International Motorcycles in Canoga Park,-was 2nd overall, while Eddie Cole and Jim Dawson were 3rd and 4th. The Powder Puffs - as always a real crowd pleaser - were beaten three straigh t times by Janene Pennington (Yam), Cherry Stockton .(Bul) and Charleen Higgsin (Sach) latched onto 3rd and 4th. Leading the "Mature Motocrossers," the UDiggin' Dinosaurs," to the final wire, were: Nick "Stubs" McLeoad (Hus), Carl Casanova (Yam), Jim Harris (Ossa) and Ed Poore (Bul). The race for these gents is now a regular .fL'Xture at the old reservation, and their membership now numbers very near forty. Division "B" of the I OOcc Juniors was conquered by John McDonald (Kaw) as he caught hold of Bob The 11 th annual International Custom Car, Motorcycle & Hot VW's show will be held April 15, 16, 17, 18 at the beautiful Los Angeles Sports Arena.
