~ACTORS INVADE INDIAN DUNES By John Grout Photos by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., March 7, 1971 - Actor Steve McQueen, joining a top notch field of 414 Junior motocross combatants in today's ACE sponsored races at Indian Dunes Park, was able to gather a fourth and a first place finish in two of the motos before running into trouble in the last go-round. McQueen, who was astride a scorching Husky in the Open events, got the checkered from fellow actor Jim Garner upon completing the first race. Then Garner - displaying an eye for beauty - flagged the Powder Puffs into activity for their second ride of the day. And keeping a close eye on the "eyer" was a familiar face better known as Paul Newman. In any event, McQueen, who was blessed with a crawl-away start in his final moto, had been playing a game of catch-up for the entire program and he was facing some of the best riding talent now going in the Junior ranks. CONVERSATION PIECE This conversation was overheard in the pits at a recent Carlsbad Moto-Cross: "Hey. what's that you've got there?" "It's my new Ajay Stormer." "What on earth made you buy that?" ·Welt. my other ring-a-ding was getting a bit bent up and I just liked the look of the AJS standing on the shop floor. They're reatly well finished, you know." "True, but it strikes me that AJS hasn't been around long enough yet to get established." "That's what I thought till I went into it. Apparently they started selling them on the West Coast last April but they had them in Europe a year before that and have won two British Championships. Don't forget, they've got Norton behind them." 'Hmmmmmmmmml Does the yellow tank mean it's a 360 or something?" "Sort of, except it's aetu.Uy a 370." "How does it go?" "Pretty good once I got used to the ge.r change on the other side." "Their ads are always on about their handling. Is it really any better than the other bikes?" "You're not kidding. I've no idea how but, boy, ~t just sails ower the bumpy stuff. The Dealer uid the frame was designed by the same guy who did the Commando Superbik.... "Well, I suppose it's quite a good bike for the novice." "You're absolutely riFt. I've only been Moto-Crossing five months and some of these bikes are too demn hard to run unless you'r~ Bob Grossi or Ake Jonsson. It strikes m. thlt AJS has concentrated on making a very simple, easy to rid. but fast scooter which will t*e ride" into the Experts during their first season." "That can't be bad. Jeez! You adjusted that chain real quick." "Oh, sure, they've got a lot of little ideas like that eccentric cam method." "Yeah I YOU know, you've really got me thinking. How much do these things cost, anyway?" "Well, that's really up to your Dealer, but it's easily the cheapest of any European bik.... "Is that so?" "And another thing I like is the Parts Prices. They',e a~littie less ft.an most of the othen and so far every ptIrt I've wanted has been av.ila~e over the counter. I'm very happy, anyw-v." "Okay, glad I talked to you. I may see you at Indian Dunes," . . . . . AND HE DID ... WITH A STORMER OF HIS OWN ... AND NOW HE'S HAPPY TOO!!
