Houstonians Top Lockhart • K&B Cycle-sponsored Sprite rider Bob Morgan powers before his engine seized during the second 250 Sr. moto. New Track Draws Complaints By Randy D. Bailey PHOENIX. ARIZ., Feb. 28, 1971 When Arizona Desert Raceways (ADR) opened today for its first big motocross, Valley riders were hopeful that ADR would be a top·notch course. For many, the CQurs-e was a disappointment. Several top·rated Arizona riders complained that the course was too narrow, too dusty, and too hard on their bikes. After a short discussion with ADR officials concerning track conditions, sponsored riders Butch Beard (Kaw), Byron Boaz (Mai), Paul Neimi (C.Z), Brian LaPlante (Mai) and several others packed up and left. For the racers who stayed, there was the challenge of 15-20 miles-per-hour wind gusts, chilled by 45-degree termperatures, plus the deteriorating course surface and clouds of blinding dust. Because of the narrow course and the thick dust, the first bike at the start into the first turn usually led for the win. But, even with poor racing conditions, Chuck Lampe riding a Carabella was able to put on a good sh ow and get revenge on Honda-mounted Rick Kraft in the 125 Senior class. Kraft has been embarrassing the 125 Senior riders at Manzanita Speedway recently with several motocross class victories aboard his Honda. Lampe beat Kraft off the line to lead the Honda to the flag in the first two motos. Then, Kraft got crafty and powered by Lampe's Carabella in the third moto to get the last laugh. Marion Warren, riding an American Eagle, provided the nearly 50 spectators with a spectacular crash while leading the second 250 Junior moto. The throttle stuck on the A-E just as Warner crested a jump approaching the finish line to make his landing somewhat bumpy. He was uninjured, but did not restart. Ron Saum (Yam) steamed by the downed Eagle for the 250 win. In the 250 Senior Class it was a parade for Ron Shuman, on a Husky, )after most of his competition left in the pre-race squabble. Shuman led all laps of the Senior motos for the class win and set the fastest times of the day. He was able to lap the nearly one·mile course in 1 :58.0 which was at least six-seconds faster than any other competitor. The Open Senior class listed only three bikes after the pre-race walk off. Dennis Himes riding a BSA·Yamaha West sponsored' Greeves. eased around the course to win all three motos. As a result, Houston made a great showing, and took home lots of gold. In the 125cc Expert class Freddy Hanna took first place and Steve Hackney took second place for the H & H Racing Team. Both of the Houston boys ride Pen tons. The track seemed to fit their riding style as they battled it out for first place. It was great to see Bob Graham back out and looking great as he won both the 250cc Expert class and the Open Expert class. Graham couldn't be caught in either race, and with his usual smoothness, he coUected the prize money. Robi Holbert had unfortunate luck with both his 250cc and 400cc Husky, allowing Graham and his AJS the victory. In second place (250cc) was Jack Hicks, who found his competition in the third place winner, Wayne Jones, also a Houstonian. Wayne was wired to his Husky Sunday, and could do no wrong. He rode as consistent a race as was ever ridden, and took home third place money to prove it. Wayne is one of the better riders from the Houston area. Graham flew in the Open Expert class. He looked as though he had been ·born on his "AJS". In this race, Bob's main competition was Scott Elliott, who came in second. Though Elliott rode a tremendous race, Bob was definitely out of sight and rode his own race throughout the last two heats. Another Houstonian, Mike Murski, won third place money on his new Greeves. Dan Weir took home the first place trophy in the 125cc Novice class with Mike Brown of Houston right behind him to win second. In third place was Craig Glover, who kept both the first and second place win ners on their toes. The 250cc Novice class was taken by Robbie Robinson on a Yamaha. Robbie won the first place trophy by managing to be consistent throughout the race, which should give some hope to those APRIL FOOL ISSUE - SILLY STUFF NEEDED As the start of the annual Silly Season approaches, the editors of good 01' Cycle Snooze would like to invite readers to send in funny material for inclusion in our annual April Fool Issue. J: Don rides a Husqvarna for all its worth, ~ and usually takes home a trophy for his ::; efforts. In third place was a young man Ii' who is definitely up and coming on the ~ motocross scene, Robert Tuggle. Tuggle z rides a Husky also, and is becoming w quite a jockey in the field. Perhaps he d will give Hanna and Hackney something >to think about. U None other than Bob Atkins, of the Cyclesports Park track in Houston won the Open Novice class. Bob purchased a new 400cc Husky last week, and has been hot to try it out. Needless to say, Atkins took to the Husky like a duck takes to water. He was up and away with his class, and couldn't resist cracking the throttle to do a wheelie for the crowd now and then. Another Houston boy, Bobby Wilson, on a 360cc CZ, took second place. Bobby is another who is coming on strong lately, and is expected to give the big boys a rough time in the near future. In third place was Billy Caster, who also rode a good race, and managed to let both Atkins and Wilson know he was around. (Results on page 26) Hare Scrambles Feb. 14, 1971 100 Am/Ex.
