IT SNOW MX JOKE By Dodie &,tingley ARLINGTON, TEX., Feb. 7, 1971 The wind was out of the north, it was 22 degrees and the dust was terrible, bu t the crowd was unusually large this Sunday at Arlington Motocross Park. They saw what they came to see, a good race with lots of action. Then, these little "things" were noticed flying around in the air. At first everyone thought it was ashes blowing through from the fifes that had been built in the big barrels scattered about the area to warm up by. But, it was actually snowing (rare in these here pans) swirling down thick and sticking. Of course, by now everyone was numb anyway with their red noses and teeth chattering. The flagman, James Bostick, looked like an Indian doing some sort of a war dance with his blanket wrapped around him and doing some mighty fast maneuvers to keep from freezing. It seems nothing can dampen the spirits of these people. They've come in large numbers from far and near and raced in sweltering heat, rainstorms, duststorms and now snow. One rider, who had rode so hard for his third place position and 10 bucks prize money, had walked over to one of the fife barrels to deposit a handful of trash he accidentally threw his 10 dollar bill in with it. He could only stand there and watch it curl up and tum to ashes. Shrugging and forcing a smile as he walked away, he said "Oh well, I had fun winning it." His face was the same color as his hot pink leathers. David Jones (CZ) grabbed the lead in both 125 motos and was out front as the riders disappeared from view to the back side of the track. But when they reappeared Wyman Priddy (Kaw) had overtaken him. Ole Finstad (Pen) held second until the last lap when he developed mechanical problems with J ones coming in second. Wyman finished flfSt in the 125 Sr. class. Anthony Jones blazed the trail all the way in the 250 Sr. and Open class, winning $50 for first place. Anytime Jones is in the race the spectators get plenty of action. J DC Rachel (Mai) was hanging in there hard and fast behind Jones, when (as Joe descnbed it) something suddenly grabbed him by the shoulder and jerked him from his cycle; it turned out to be his chain. LAS VEGAS, NEV., Feb. 7, 1971 The race was held approximately 10 miles from the Main Gate of Nellis Air Force Base on BLM land. It was a combination of mostly sandy terrain and a few rocky hills. It was more like an eight mile motocross. The 0·125 class was the first off the line with a LeMans type start. The flfSt hill we had to go over took a toll of five riders in a crash; no one was hurt. After that. the riders spread out a lot due to the soft sandy terrain. In front after about two miles was Bob Davidson riding a Penton. This is 'a rider to watch out for. He is only an Amateur and is already beating the best of the Expert riders. Next was Danny Davis riding a Sachs who is also an Amateur. The next heat was the 126-250 class. They also used the LeMans type start. Bill Hill and Terry Griebel were the two front runners at the first lap. Then a Novice rider, Kim Tucker, passed Griebel, who happens to be an Expert. This is only the second race for Tucker. Bill Hill held him off for the overall win with Tucker taking second overall. The last race was the Open class. Early leader Tom Scales was closely followed by Kim Wolfe, until he got lost on the course, but retained his second place position_ The third place rider until he tired and dropped out, due to the fact he also rode the 125 class, was Pat Friel. Scales was the fmal overall winner followed closely by Wolfe for an easy second place. (Results on page 20) !'.odW SUBSCRIBE IIont... Gree•• M_cycles S,.",.il.'.' C,d. (14) 893-1051 Rick.... _tin.
