R/DE (j) EVENTS MOTOCROSS NO POST ENTRIES AT SERIES EVENTS ONLY Hare Scrambles Fast But Rough By Bob Grant Photo by Cecil's Cycle Center OCOTILLO, CAL.• Jan.-31, 1971 - The Sod Busters M.C. hosted a little more than 100 desert riders here today for a Hare Scrambles run over a 21-mile course for four laps The smoke bomb was set off for the 10 o'clock as all classes of riders went at once from a dead engine start. There was hardly any wind at all so the dust was unbelievable. The course was g.enerally fast, but rough, with one long sandwash where you could really tum it on. • Taking the lead immediately was Ken Renick on a Husky, and he stretched it to about five minutes at the end of the first loop over second place Scott King riding a Montesa. Third overall was CZ mounted Curtis Smith. Renick kept the lead through the sec.ond loop with King and Smith slowly closing ground. H',;.'.. , ":.;,' , . . however, King did an endo on the rough back section and Smith piloted his new 360 CZ by him and set sights on the front-running' Renick, By this time severe blisters on his hands were slowing Renick considerably, Just before the end of the third lap Smith slipped by Reuick at the end of a sandwash. Smith then went on ·to win overall and first Open Expert with King second and Renick third, Gene Fetty (Hus) was fourth overall and Jeff Willis on a Montesa was fifth overall and first 250 Expert. Steve Stallings on a 360 CZ was first Novice and 9th overall. After the race many riders complained of poor course markings and some reportedly missed the fU'St check on the first lap, However, further investigation showed that all riders who finished all four laps did not miss any cheeks. The extreme amount of dust probably accounted for much of the confusion on the first· lap and the race was generally well run by the Sod Busters who seem to have an ample number of members to run the race, although not too much cooperation was given to this writer in request for results.
