MIKUNI CARB STRIP • M lL Workshop By Rod Breaker For some reason. the thought of doing a job on the carb seems to scare most riders out. What the reason is I have no idea. unless it is from experience with automobile carburetors which do seem to be rather complex. Most motorcycle carburetors are very simple in design and yet work extremely well. We will attempt to do a strip on most of the popular caros in the coming weeks. so if you do not see yours right away. hang tight. it will probably show up.. shown, take out the idle jet. 6.1 Remove all rubber and fiber parts and soak everythIng in carb cleaner. A small can like this one is available in most auto parts stores and will last a long time. After the solution has soaked everything clean, wash off well with solvent and blow the parts dry with compressed air if possible. It is now ready to reassemble. set the idle air screw all the way in and back it out about 1Y.t turns. this will give you a good starting point for edjusting the idle. Before installing the idle jet, check that you can see daylight through it as this passage is very small and is easily blocked. 3.) Four Phillips screws secure the float chamber cover, remove theSe and take away 1.) This Mikuni was brought in minus the' components that remain on the throttle cable. If you are doing your own, these should be cleaned up as well. This one is from a Yamaha YOS·2 and was so full of crud that you could hardly recognize it as a carburetor. --- 2.) Remove any fuel lines, breather hoses and overflow hoses. Using a 12mm wrench, remove the starter carburetor assembly (choke) as a unit. This unit should never be dipped in carb cleaner, just scrub it well with solv'i!nt. Remove the idle air screw and spring and a!:oo the idle adjustment screw and spring if one is fitted. (This model edjusts the idle .t the top of the carb.! the cover. You may have to tap it lightly with the handle of the screwdriver to break it loose. Remove the gasket and discard it, replace it with a new one when assembling. 4.) With the cover removed, push out the flat hinge pin with a small nail and the float will come away along the float needle. Using a 10mm wrench. remove the needle seat and the fiber washer under it. This washer can usually be used again or else replace it. Sol Removal of the main iet and the washer under it ..will allow the needle- iet to· fall out the top of the carbo (When replacing th is needle jet. notice there is a locating peg to position it correctly.) Remove the mounting flange O-ring and using a small screwdriver as .:-:,. , ••P, .. ~ ~ w -J ~ 0
