PUBLIC LAND-FOR OFF ROAD A special citizens' advisory committee, meeting in Riverside on Feb. 10, has recommended that the Riverside District Office of the Bureau of Land Management make public lands in the 15,OOO·acre Stoddard Valley area sou th of Barstow available for off-road vehicle use. The High Desert Recreation ,Use Committee, appointed to assist the BLM in identifying suitable sites for the rapidly growing use of the California Desert by ORV users, also scheduled March 20 for an on-site investigation of a larger proposed area in the J obnson Valley area southeast of Barstow. Jack Wilson, BLM District Manager, said his staff will begin work immediately on delineating boundaries, identifying such potential hazards as open mine shafts, developing means of marking private lands in the Stoddard Valley area and developing an informational map and brochure. Committee members described the area as excel1ent for "play machines," or weekend trail motorcycle riders, but not large enough for organized cycle races or other maior events. After the committee unanimously adopted the recommendation that the BLM proceed with measure necessary to make the Stoddard Valley available for ORV use, Wilson said ORV users on the committee must join with BLM in spreading the word of the rider's responsibility to stay in the area and res pect boundaries and land and re~ources values. TROJAN 2505 OUT IN fORCE By Eddie Smith SOUTH GATE, CAL., Feb. 12, 1971 The "big bikes" at Trojan Speedway turned out in numbers Friday night and put on another good show for the spectators. Eighty bikes in all were on hand for the TT and flat track racing. Chris 'Smith, riding a Montesa for Don's Tire & Cycle and K&W Products, jumped into the lead of the 250 TT trophy dash. Chris battled off the rest of the field for his win. Ray Vanderpool was the winner of the 250 Flat Track trophy dash mounted on his Bultaco. At the start of the 250 TT Main Event bikes ridden by Chris Smith, Mike Hannon, and Ron Powell al1 tangled in the rust turn. The race was stopped for a restart. On the restart three more bikes came together with Chet Burt, Ron Powell and Dennis Greeson all taking to the dirt. All three were back on their bikes for the second restart. Fifteen 'of the scheduled 16 riders were all on the line to try for the third time to race. On the start Powell jumped into the lead in the first tum and was pressed by Burt and Smith.
