By Dick Wright POMONA, CAL., Feb. 14,1971 - The San Gabriel Valley M.C. ran true to form; they put on a good race as they always do. There were over 300 riders, and the last race finished just before dark. Osteen Park is in the middle of a large grassy meadow. The course was watered all day Saturday and after practice the track became hard packed almost like a T.T. course except with a lot more off camber turns and no dust. Bob Messer on a Maico had his hands full dicing with the old Pro Feets Minert on a new B.S.A. single. They really put on a show as Minert took the fITst mota in clean form not making one bobble that would give Messer a chance to take the lead. But on the second mota Minert was last off the line by a 100 yards. Messer took the lead and Minert moved up to fourth. The hard chargiag Larry Bird took second on a fast Yamaha. Now the scene was set for the last moto. Messer got a good start and took the lead but the smooth Minert was ..ble to take him on the choppy off camber turns on the second Ipa. Feets couldn't lose Messer though. He stayed right on his rear tire, and on the last lap they went over the Dack hill wheel to wheel. When they came back into view it was Messer who came in to take the win. F eets looked good taking. second while the young Junior Larry Bird took a. third for the day. Both Billy Payne and John Rice ran into bad luck. Jim Fishback was the class in the 250 Junior-Expert go, on his hot C.Z., he really could power slide those hard packed T.T. turns. He used the berms like they were made just for him. He took two fITSts and a second for the win. Bob Maynard took second on a Maico and Mike Chamberlain was third, also on a Maico. The 125 Junior-Expert go was a bar to bar battle between Don Emler and Jeff Wright, both on Team Rickmans. They fought the first moto wheel to wheel with Emler taking the flag .by six inches. The second mota took its toll as Wright put the pass on Emler in the fast tum at the end of the straight of way and he slid out. Emler took the mota and Tom Zahnter (Hod) took second. Wright got up to take third. The lead changed three times on the last mota, until the last lap when Emler and Wright went over the hill wheel to wheel and down the other side neither one would shut off, and Emler went over the high side and did a endo. Wright took the mota. Emler was the top man overall with two wins and a second, Wright took. second; Tony Rogers third on a Yamaha. There were a big group of 125 Novices on hand. Chris Jackson was the top man in the Div. I on his Penton. Bruce McLeod took second on a Bultaco. Steve Hoeller did the job in the Div. 2 moto on a Bultaco: Steve Copelin was second on a Yamaha. There was a wild group of 250 Novices and they had to be split up in two divisions. Rex Staton won Div. 1 on his hot Ossa, Jim MacDonald took a well earned second on his Husky. Scott Hendrickson was the second division winner with Ellis Harlin taking second on aC.Z. The Powder Puff go was won by Chery Stockton on a well tuned Sachs. Pat Classon was second on a Bultaco. The Side Hacks put on a good show. The well prepared Wasp of John Pal treyman pilot and Steve Foss passenger were able to keep all three wheels on the course and took two fITSts and a second for top honors of the day. In the pits after the race Bob Messer said, "that was a blast, that Minert is tough. 1 am sure glad my tuner, E.C. Birt got my bike going good. 1 needed everything I coud get out of it."
