" '" '" "- BIG BIKES PRODUCING GOOD TROJAN SHOW By Eddie Smith ~ w Z W ..J U >- U SOUTH GATE, CAL., Jan. 29, 1971 The big bikes of Trojan Speedway, the 250cc class, have been coming out in numbers and putting on quite a show. Tom Horton, riding a Montesa and co-sponsored by K&W Products went out and won himself two trophy dashes and a main event Friday night. In the 250 TI Dash, Horton put his Montesa in the turn first and that's where he stayed. In the 250 FT Dash, Horton battled the consistent Dan Corbett for the lead and at the finish it was Horton across the finish line fi·rst. The 250 TI Main was restarted when three bikes collided in the first dog leg with all three riders taking to the dirt. On the restart Horton jumped into the lead off the line and was pressed hard by Mike Hannon on a Bultaco. Horton managed to keep his Montesa ahead of Hannon for the win. Also during this race there was a real close battle for the third spot. John Vandorfesst edged his C-Z just ahead of Ron Rinjen's Kawasak.i for third place. The closest race of the night was the 250 FT Main. Chet Burt jumped into the lead on his Bultaco with Horton righ t behind him followed by Doug Mason. At the finish Burt edged Mason over the line with Horton right with him. The trio battled just inches apart the entire race. In the 100 TI class, again it was Bob Sanders (Kaw) with a 15 seconds lead over second place finisher Wally Jones. Placing third behind Jones' Suzuki was Scott Dorrnbos (Hon). Sanders was also the winner of the 100 FT Main on his T&R Industries prepared bike, corssing the finish line while the second place bike Tom Doty was coming out of tum four. In the 125 TI Main Sanders again was fITst over the line with Richard Gunn on a Yamaha right behind him. John Sperry (Yam) was third. Richard Gunn beat Sanders in the 125 FT Main. This time Dan Bousman was third. Sanders also rode to victory in three Dunecycles Invade Trojan Special By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., Jan. 24, 197 I The stock market rallied bullishly this week, and after winning three main events Sunday afternoon, the hottest item in the Trojan Speedway exchange was a commodi ty named Bob Sanders. A respected race track cliche, class will tell, was proven in the combined motorcycle and dunecycle racing program in South Gate as Sanders, of Whittier, Calif., faced a tough field of . riders and continued to outclass his racing rivals by winning the 100 TI, 100 F.T. and the 125 F.T. ~bin Events on his sleek Kawasaki mounts. It may be a bit presumptous to rank Sanders as a future big-time champions, but the potential was there as he treated a good, but still disappointing crowd of en th usiastic fans to some sizzling action while defeating his hottest opponent, Richard weeny (Kaw) in all three even ts. Not to be out-classed by the local track favorites, Rick Woods, U.S. speedway motorcycle racing champion, won the dunecycle main event action over "Wild" Bill Cody, and Bob Mills. Bob Stewart and Tom Stull, riding modified versions of the popular three-wheelers, finished fourth and fifth respectively. Following in l1is big-brothers footsteps, Gene Woods, who at this stage of the game appears headed for even bigger stardom than his famed brother, Rick, won the junior dunecycle main and even beat Rick in an earlier even t of dunecycle action. Unquestionably the short fifth-mile and tricky TT course of Trojan is currently providing the ultimate in short-track bike action, and exhibiting their share of thrills were Danny Corbett (Bul) in winning the 125 TT and 250 IT Mains over Richard Cann (Yam) and speedway star rider, Cody, and Jim Tabler (Yam) in defeating Corbett in the 250 r.T. ~Iain. In one of the worst spills of tl,e afternoon, Larry Chapman of Long Beach, was badly shaken after losing control of his bike during the running of the 125 F.T. ~Iain. but escaped serious injury. (Results on page 18) Trojan Speedway has some very close TT and FT banles. ~EAL~RS TION If You're Not Selling Cycle News Here's Your Cllance To Get Witll It • First with News • First with Fact • Fi rst with Profit Your customers wi II come back for every issue CYCLE NEWS.
