BISHOP M. C. HOSTS SPLENDID MOTOCROSS their 125's really are by finishing way ou t in fron t in th e 125 Senior race. Dave Williams really shook up the troops by riding his super fast Yamaha to first place in the 250 Junior race. Everyone put on a great show and helped to insure that future races will be bigger and better, with more trophies, prizes, etc. (Results on page 18) Poulin Pulls Off Double Play By G.R. Metcalf W BISHOP. Cal., Jan. 24, 1971 - An unqualified success is what riders and spectators alike were calling this first motocross race at the new Bishop Motorcycle Club Cycle Park, a 40-acre area leased by the club. Some 65 riders and an estimated 1000 spectators· enjoyed perfect weather and an outstanding event from start to finish. Locals and visitors joined together in a display of motocross racing that already has riders and spectators looking foward to the next even 1. The 1.6 mile course looked good and rode good with a timing tower, good start area, course marker.s, room to pass, and the necessary features of a good motocross course. Judging fiom the response to this first race, a brigh t future is predicted for this course. Petty won. a tie for first place by Husky mounted Randy McCoy and Steve Thompson, also riding Husky. Open Senior first place was bagged by Maico mounted Gary Hornby. Bryon Frenyea rode two classes and finished frrst in Open Junior on a 360 CZ, and second in 250 Junior class on a 250 Suzuki - a hard day's work. Sachs mounted Preston Petty and Gene Cannady demonstrated how fast south of Mammoth Lakes, so one has cause to speculate on the possibility of a future weekend event with a race one day at Mammoth Lakes, and the next day at Bishop. How about that? There were many spirited races like the 250 Senior th.at was battled to e specialze it Jawa/C-Z,] C the specialty machines. MONROE, WASH., Jan. 24, 1971 Rick Poulin pulled off a doubleheader this Sunday by winning both the 250 and 125 Senior classes at the first in a series of four motocrosses put on by the Bothell Stump-Jumpers M/C. It proved to be a good day for Eastern Washington riders as Rick's friend and Yakima neighbor Jim Pomeroy grabbed a hard-won win in the 500 Senior. The action took place on a new course laid out on and around the grounds of the-Sky Valley Speedway, an auto short oval that currently resembles a small lake due to recent rains. The course was moist and tacky, great traction, and had two jumps, one of which was a great, soaring thing on the main straight that put you so high you began to think about bringing a parachute. Most of the track, including the best of some neat, bermy turns, was visible from one place and a fairly decent turnout of spectators enjoyed the show. The 125 Seniors and Juniors ran together since there were only six riders signed up .to ride Senior. There was no doubt in anyone's mind who the Seniors were during the race. They were the guys out in front, always. It was almost monotonous though, since Poulin, Brian Barthrop, and Mike Budschat were 1-2-3 in every moto. Rick McCaffery was top of the heap in the Juniors. All the leaders but Barthrop, on a Bultaco, were Sachs mounted. The rest of the Seniors, 250 and 500, were also run together with some very interestinR results. Rick Poulin out his 250 Maico out in front of the entire pack much of the time and would have won both classes if they'd let him. He was pressed hard by second place Gordy Ochs on a 250 Bultaco who was in-turn hassled by Husky rider Bob Mutch. And where, you migh ask, were all those big bore fellas? Well, they were there all right, and they had their turns in the lead, but there was obviously no clear cut advantage in having a few more cubes than the next guy. There were just enough turns and tight spots to balance things out pretty much. Hard-<:harging Bill Bevaart was really getting it on with his 400cc Maico and looked for a while like he had a winning thing going. His primary competition was Jim Pomeroy who was doing some really incredlble things on that 360 .Bultaco. Most of these guys get crossed up in the air every time they see a camera focused on them, they even smile. at you. Not Pomeroy. He gets crossed up because he rides on the naked edge of disaster. As for smiling, he's much too busy for that. In the final moto', Pomeroy tangled with someone and went down at the start. By the time he got moving again the pack was long gone and he had a lot of catching up to do. At this point things were going just fine for Bevaart. However, I1omeroy just flat poured it on and proceeded to charge past the crowd with a tremendous display of skill and a large dose of courage. He passed people wherever he CJ!IIle upon them, regardless (Please turn to pg. 13) The Bike Shop 2021 Via Burton Anaheim, Calif. 92806 I (714) 635-1450 the West (On State College Blvd. 1 blk. north of Riverside Fwy.l COLISEUM CYCLE and MAIL ORDER ACCESSORY CO. ~KAWASAKI MOTORCYCLES 3958 E. 14th ST., OAKLAND, CAL.
