The club chose the hilly section just 10 miles N.E. of Palm Springs which obviously had received plenty of care, as the ~ 'course was beautifu.lly marked with w Z both lime and arrows. It was a course W that gave all sides of desert .racing with ..J U washes and a >- 'plenty of hills, twisty sand loops of 20 U few fast sections. Three miles each got under way at, 11 a.m., with Jim Francis in the lead on the first lap, Charles Curnutt Jr. running second and Joe Kulek third. After 20 more miles of racing Francis • was still holding the lead and Kulek had slipped pass Curnutt. Not far behind the leaders, Greg Hawks was running 4th overall, on a 100cc. Movie Director Howard Hawks was among the many spectators viewing the race and proudly so as son Greg Hawks moved up to a well ridden 4th overall and lst 100cc Expert. Steve Hargan, motorcycle enthusiast and a top pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, reluctantly decided to spectate instead of race, after just signing a contract for the new season. Television and Motion Picture Star Chuck Conners, getting his first taste of desert riding, was busy climbing hills and zig zagging down washes, spectating' the race from all possible viewpoints and occasionally picking up a point or two from popular Ron Burpo, still recuperating from a leg injury sustained in motocross last April. Ron, the local Honda Triumph dealer, provided Chuck with his 350 motosport for the day. (Raults on page 20) Story & Photo by Richard Walden ADELANTO, CAL. - There has long been a need in this area for events where the beginning and Rovice rider could test himself before trying an all-out, 80 mile Hare and Hound. The Sportsman' Racing Association, formerly R.V. Enterprises, filled that need Jan. 17 with their Beginner and Novice European Scrambles. The course was an easy but interesting 5.7 mile loop which curved out across open desert from the start, through some foothills, then back down a winding sandwash to the finish. It was a fun course with a bare minimum of danger spots. The 100, 125 Beginners race saw R. Hoff win the 125 end while) 2-year-old Ronnie Bragdon showed the troops some class with an "up on the pegs" charge that took the 100 division. His brother Tommie then took over the tiny Yamaha and grabbed second place gold in the 100 Novice race behind Tom Zahnter. Mike Devereux won 125 honors. Fifty-seven-year-old Bob Bates showed the kids a thing or two off the line only to crash hard in the berm of home check. Undaunted, he restarted and stormed off to regain all lost positions on the very next lap and win the Over·forty class. The Beginners event for 175, 250, and Open bikes saw Gaylor Mosier take SOUTH GATE, CAL., Jan. 22, 1971 - Bob Sanders had another night of firm control at Trojan Speedway. All classes saw excellent competition. Ed Irsik rode his Honda to an excellent win in the 100 Intermediate class as did newcomer Von Peterson aboard his Sachs in the 125 Intermediate class. The 250 Intermediate win went to Mike Faulkner astride his Husky as he spent some time in front of several SeniorS. The. 250 Senior win eventually went to Rex Staten after some phenomenal riding, with the 500 Senior go falling to Bud Feldkamp on his Husky. There were 17 riders disqualified for pit riding, so I doubt that we'll see that again. Above Larry Bird, 125cc ·Sr. Winner. Report by Dave Brown, photo by Bob Rasmussen. (Results on page 12.)
