I.N. ROBERTS WINS PASADENA Me H~S. By Dick Wright FOUR CORNERS, CALIF., Jan. 10, 1971 - The weather was brisk, the dust was flying and the desert hounds were out in force, looking for a new and better year in 1971. The new numbers are not out as yet, so everyone used their old number. The old year type start was used as well. The 500cc and 250cc went off first and the 100cc class went fifteen minutes later. The starting area was fast with low bushes, a few road crossings and a sandwash to cross. It was about three miles to the bomb. The course made a right turn abou t two miles after the bomb, and the entire loop ran clockwise. When the banner dropped, you could see a big plume of dust heading for the smoke bomb; It was generated by the very quick Greeves of Randy Burrack. Tom Muto was second to the bomb on a Husky. Th.e first loop was a fast forty-two minutes with Roberts the leader by a minute and a half over the second man, Muto. The first 250cc through the pits was Jerome Ruzicka on a Yamaha running sixth. The second loop around was a little faster because J.N. knew where the bad spots were and could reall y get wi th. it. He came in for the win, saying he "had , a blast, it's a good way to start a year!" Rich. Thorwaldson, Rickman mounted, pulled in second; he had moved up quite a bit, from tenth anhe fir.st check. Tom Mu to was third. The old desert pro George Walker was having a ball on his new Kawasaki taking a well-earned fourth. Larry Burns was fifth on a fIusky followed by Steve Kirk on a Rickman. Wayne Garrett took first 125 on a Yamaha. Rick Shirey took fust 250 on his new Yamaha. Larry Mahoney did his thing and gave his fans a good show taking first Amateur on a Montesa. The frrst Novice in was a very happy Jerome Hill on a Husky, second ovice in was Walt Boysha also on a Husky. By this time the riders were stacked up twenty deep and we were not able to get the 250cc Novice winner. Terry Clark grabbed the lead in the 100cc class on his Harley Davidson, with Mitch Mayes also Harley mounted running second. Clal k got a flat tire early on the first loop, but was still able to come into th~ pits with a thre~ minute lead. His pit crew changed the wheel in record time, and he went out only two minutes behind Mayes; the "unreal" Clark made the time up and came in for the win. Mayes was second, Allen Lund took third on a Sachs. Larry Roesler was the first Amateur in on a Harley making a good day for them. First Novice went to Steve Goldberg on a Hodaka. Ln the pits after the race, the general feeling was that there was too much dust (as usual). Most riders also felt that there should have been a check at the first right tum four miles out. As Dick Camp. No. 7x, said, "A lot of riders were cutting that turn on the second loop because you knew there wasn't a check there. I had to repass a bunch of riders." Mike Patrick and Terry Clark agreed, "Yau could see the riders pulling off the marked course and cutting across to the other traiL" (Results on page 20) SANDERS SETS THE PACE fOR TROJAN By Eddie Smith SOUTH GATE, CALIF., Jan. 8, 1971If the first race of the year is any indication, then Bob Sanders has a very productive season in store for him at Trojan Speedway. The T & R Industries sponsored Kawasaki rider sped his way to four trophy dash wins and a like number of TT and Flat Track firsts. Sanders first captured the 100 TT dash wiLh room Lo spare and came right back to top the J 25 TT dash. A short while la tel' the same classes in Fla t Track dashes also fell to Sanders. As in the dash, he jumped to a.n early lead in the 100 TT Main and built a healthy lead to win. He blue-printed the 125 TT Main by again taking tlle early lead and holding it through the duration of the event. Sanders made the 100 & 125 a clean sweep by taking both in Flat Track action as well. Chris Smith (Mon) picked up three of the remaining four Dash and Main wins as he headed the competition in 250 TT and FT Dashes and 250 FT Main. Bob Dournbos (Bul) was the winner of the 250 IT Main.
