LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The opening of the new half-million dollar Murray Hertz Honda agency is being heralded as the "single most advanced step taken in the retail sales of motorcycles in the nation." The agency is housed in a new Spanish style building on a two-acre site at Vegas Valley Drive and Boulder Highway. Hertz, a former Las Vegas newspaperman and businessman', estimated the total cost of the project at about $500,000. The new building has drawn praise from community and civic leaders who have inspected it as "one of the most beautiful commercial structures in the Las Vegas valley." The building itself occupies 10,000 square feet. An unsual feature is a live snack bar located in the middle of the building. Instead of the usual vendil)g machines, food ,and beverages will be served fresh to both customers and employees. The agency will handle Honda products exclusively, and Hertz estimated it will open with an initial stock of $50,000 worth of motorcycles and upwards of $100,000 worth of parts. Clla.piolslrips well organized for nearly 200 riders from as far away as Kansas and Texas. The big spectator drawing card was to see some of our American team in action headed by Captain Russ Darnell, who incidentally had held a motocross school on the same track the day befo.re. The crowd wasn't disappointed because he and Jim West put on a show with first one and then the other taking the lead. West was put out of commission for the day though when in the second moto his bike threw a chain. Local favorite Larry Greer on his brand new Maico took over the chase and ended up a strong second place for the day behind Damell. The Powder Puffs started the day with seven riders and Carol Davis on her Sachs had a first. Sue Bowen, riding her dad's 250 Suzuki, took home the trophy for second place. The 100 Jrs., nearly 25 of them, went off the line and headed for the second tum when someone made a mistake and nine bikes made a spectacular pile.up. With only one bike out of the race, the re-start was used. A good go round ensued with John Dallaire and Bob Schwartz finishing first and second respectively. One of the most exciting races of the day were with the 125 Jrs. Div. II between two young riders both mo~ted on Sachs, John Caldwell and, Kevm Statom. Both were constantly on the alert to capitalize on the mistake of the other and they diced back and forth throughout the day. This was one race e speciah. in Jawa/C-Z, DICK DIXON'S ALLIED CYCLE the specialty machines. The Bike Shop 2021 Via Burton Anaheim, Calif, 92806 $ (714) 635-1490 the second so Higgins grabbed the leaa, Mike was up almost immediately and picked off several riders and it became neck and neck to the finish line with the two bikes ending up in a dead heat. The day drew on and the 250 Srs. were completing their third moto when rain and instant chaos. came. Spectators scattered for shelter and most left for home. The Open Jrs. were waiting on ,the line with the Open Srs. in the staging area. Every rider who hadn't ridden his third moto decided now was the time to find out how much traction' he had on the' now greasy track. Spilled riders, muddy riders, muddied number plates, lap' checkers trying to find numbers through the windshield wipers in a nearby van. The trackmen trying to get riders not racing off the track so they could keep track of the ones who were. The spectators who headed for home left too soon; they missed quite a show. One rider in the Open.Jrs. started up the muddied ramp out of the infield, got almost to the top when his bike fell over. He slipped off and slid down the ramp and gained such momentum that he slid belly down about 20 feet into the infield. The rider didn't get up and the flagman ran to his assistance thinking ne was hurt. He didn't move because he was laughing so hard and in the next few seconds bike, rider and flagman were all face- down in the mud. The day was certainly variety of different events, few casualties, lots of laughs and the AMXT came up a few dollars closer to sending a group to Europe.
