ii t I Husky took top American in the Trans-AMA. Dick: Yeah, that IS pretty funny. We had to do all of our own· mechanical work, and I think that's good. You get to know every nut and bolt on the machine that way. CN: You're right there. I would never trust a dealer to work on my machine., Dick: Well, there are some guys I'd trust to work on mine. Gunnar (Lindstrom), for instance. Now he's belped me a lot. He really knows those macbines. And be's taught me. a lot about riding, too. CN: What do you think is the best motocross machine? Dick: (Pointing to his Husky) That right there. I raced 19 professional .races this year, and took home money m 18 Eagle's Winter Scramble.s By Loretta Davidson LA GRANGE, CALIF., Dec. 13, 1970 - Today the Westside Eagles M.C. held the first of several Winter Scrambles and rain threatened all day. The track was cushioned but fast for the racers that go! Bruce Hood did his part as he did a superb job of announcing throughout the day. One of the many highlights of the day was the way Rod Halstead handled himself in the 100 Novice beat race. He looked like he was jet powered as he overtook and passed eight riders in the first sweeping tum. David Nelson and Dale Mathers had no easy job holding him off to take first and second leaving third for him in the main event. Jeff Davidson looked like .be was Sunday driving in the 100 Am-Expert to win first overall witb Bill Cloud takirrg first Amateur. The largest class of the day was the 250 Novice with 35 riders charging, falling and changing positions many times with the exception of Howard Hendry wbo handled his Ossa as a boss.. Gordon Winters, Robert Dudley and Ron Boley put on a great show as they battled for position, finally fmisbing in that order. Roy Winters bac;! a runaway in the 250 Amateur cIass with no one able to come close to bis Import Cycle Montesa. Ray Huff seemed to have tbe 250 Expert Main sewed up until the third lap when he developed trouble and his bike quit leaving it open for bis son, Dennis, to take the checkered with Gary Lozano in his rear pocket to take second. The Open Amateur seemed to be a replay as Roy Winters did it again on another Import Cycle Montesa. Ray Huff made a different story of the Open Expert as his Yamaha appeared to have wings. He flew in for first with Tom Clark giving it all he had to take second. (Results on page 42) Dick: No. Generally a bike will do just what you want it to - or rather, just what you TELL it to. The only thing I don't like is to land on the Iront wbeel from a jump. Tbe Husqvarna is pretty good; it's easy to keep the front end in the air. I had a Bultaco for a while, and didn't like that at all. CN: Just one more thing. How did you travel? Dick: I had a Ford Club Wagon (Tbe Econoline model with windows.) I put in a kitchen sink and a bed that folds up. I'd move the Yamaha to the front and sleep on the bed. It was bad on gas, about 13 miles per gallon, and the Fords have a real bad fron t end. They go through tires fast. (Experience with the Cycle News van bears out both comments... ) CN: Thanks a lot Dick. And congratulations! ~ Go straight to PU.fREY ~ JI{ IULTACO TEA.JI{ Prospect. By Larry Ulrich BE;l/D, ORE., Dec. 13, 1970 - Due to bad weather conditions (frozen ground and snow) on the regular motocross track . the Cascade M.C. moved its operations 20 miles east of Bend and laid out its unscheduled motocross course on the desert among sage brush and piles of sand and gravel. The course, slightly under I mile, was well liked by rid.ers from allover Oregon. The 125 motos were hotly contested between all riders but the spectators were treated to some real bigh flying battles between two Sachs mounted riders, Rick Limbeck and Butch Waymire. Limbeck won the first and last moto with Waymire taking the second, but neither won easily. All three 250 motos were won by Keith Nerseti} on a Maico, but Jack Heeter passed Nersetb several times only to have his Ossa repassed. Charles Standiford is back riding again after recovering from a broken eollar bone and managed a third overall. In the Open class Doug Aiken rode a 400 Maico to victory over the AJ's, CZ's, and Yamaha's. This was Aikens first ride on the Maico as he just sold his 250 Husky. LImbeck, wbose 250 Maico is broke, borrowed 3 stock 360 Yamaba Enduro and gave Aiken something to worry about several times. On this tight cou·rse the power was plentiful, but the stock Yamaha suspension just didn't have it. CN: How did you get started in scrambling? Dick: I bought my first bike in '66 ... CN: What was that? Dick: (laugh) a Honda S-90 (We both laughed). Then I got a Victor in the fall of '67. In '68 I started scrambling the Victor. Then I got a C-Z, and in '69 I got sponsored by a Michigan dealer on a BSA Metisse. That was my first sponsor, but it was like scrambling a street bike. It didn't handle well. CN: What did you think of the performance of the new BSA's? Dick: Well, they always had plenty of motor. Mine bad '" lot of gearbox problems, though. I talked to Minert, and apparently they've fixed that. He had a lot of motor and a good gearbox, and good handling. They're really all right. CN: What about Minert and Aldana? Dick: Chuck is old, and he doesn't really have tbe stamina to keep up. Aldana impressed me for someone who hasn't ridden a lot of motocross. He put a lot of effort into it, and got better toward the end of the series. CN: Do you think they should have gotten somebody with more experience, like Dick Mann? Dick: I don't know about Dick Mann. (We rescinded that one, after remembering about his leg.) But it would bave to be someone who has ridden BSA before, so they didn't have much choice. I've ridden BSA before, and I would have likecl .AJ have gotten one, but I was just an unknown...still am, for that matter. CN: How long bave you been on Husqvamas? Dick: Since about April of this year, that's all. CN: Did they help you at all in the Trans-AMA series? Dick: No. (AT this point, the proprietor of the shop where Dick works piped up, "I don't see the phone jumping off the hook...") But next year Brian (Kenney) and I are going to Europe for the summer, and I expect Husqvarna will supply machines and parts, and maybe passage for us. Nothing definite has been worked out yet, though. CN, Do you ever get a helpless feeling on a bike, like you're going where the bike wants you to, period? S485.1! HANSON ENGINE.ERING CO. P.O.
