Inset: Ron Pierce's 500 Kawasaki. Racers chase through esses. PITSIDE OBSERVATIONS By Marty McGillivray The pits at the end of the season are a quite different place than at the beginning. New-season pits are always bustling with the sorting out of new machinery and hustling for position in the point standings. Here at Riverside at the close of the 1970 road racing season, most of the pit work was to keep tired old machinery running. By now point standings are pretty well set and the racing is for pride and a better chance at next year. One of th'ose shooting at next year was Alan Thompson and his private 250cc Yamaha GP bike. He's been close all year and he was still trying to find that little extra something that beats somebody's sponsored bike. It's a hard, long road and he was close today. But, it's not only the private entries that have a corner on the frustration JAN." 9Ih 11011I AM8IIA1lAmT...-vaEIIW!"'. m 1MBUlSIIIfHTl...-vaEt " SI ACIBSIIIES , IE all 1I1--IIIbIPI:I*- lii-blll-lPII-MkIs- .11I1-11-11I1 aIIIPiII -1111*. PIlI. market. Steve McLaughlin broke both of his bikes - the crank on his 350 Yamaha and Lori! knows what on his 750'Honda production bike. George Kerker found a way to hole a piston on his new Norton Commando, thus cancelling what is usually one of the more interesting races of the day, because Kerker's Norton and John McGillivray's BSA always put on a show. And sometimes there is a sneak preview of next season. Today, Reg Pridmore rolled his new Norton production bike out for all to see. Reg's 750 came with a half-fairing and c1ip-ons, but not the upswept pipes of the Commando. Different pipes might have helped him catch McGillivray's Rocket 3, but a rocket ship might have worked better.
