There's absolutely no doubt now that some people are a little confused as to what
a "Super Expert" or a "Master" (whatever the end name will end up as) will be. No
one is suggesting that they can't ride sporting events even though they are paid for
doing so, they will just be in their own class and riding for their own number one
plate. The actual idea of this originated with Larry Haley, Y/ho is the District's
Lightweight Desert bike steward and will be our referee for 1971. Larry could see the
writing on the wall: the average guy could not hope for a fair chance at the number
one plate if he had to pay all his own bills. A man riding in the Amateur class might
just chuck it all because with that expensive equipment around, he knew he didn't
stand much chance to even transfer to Expert, let alone win a trophy.
O.K. you say, but you're supposed to ride for the fun of it, right? Right. But
you're still racing and racing costs money. You struggle around, fall down whap!,
muck around in the mud, etc. but all for nothing. Even if you do beat your best
buddy who was on the line next to you, there's no way you're going to beat some of
that other equipment. Even if you couldn't beat t+$%/&*@ (remember we said no
names in these series) because you're not good enough, you still should have a
sporting chance_ If you smash up your scooter one Sunday it might take you months
to get back into action again but if t+$%&@ did it, providing he didn't bash himsdf
up, he'd be back out the next week and still riding for the same number plate you
might hope to win. You'd be home in the garage looking at a mess of parts or
watcbing from the sidelines.
Another idea from Larry Haley is that the "Super-Experts" be charged a higher
entry fee, such as $10 over ,the normal entry. Before the shrieks of protest start on
that one, the money would be paid back to the winner of that class, which would
solve the problem. That's what you guys are in there for, to make bread, and that's
what you'd be doing!
As this subject keeps growing, I've really rattled some cages and the protests are all
from the guys who would be put into the "Sul?er-Expert" class. Even if they haven't
come right out and said it to my face (cowards) the veiled insinuations are there, and
so are a couple of cold shoulders. Too bad about that. On the other side I've had
letters, phone calls from the true-blue sportsmen and one District club (I wish I could
mention but remember the no-name bit) sent a letter with the word their whole club
was behind the idea 100 percent. Thank you, gentlemen!
I've been asked my own views. To answer that completely in print would take at
least four pages and my editor wouldn't answer that completely in print would take
at least four pages and my editor wouldn't allow it anyway but if someone wants to
put a "Super-Expert" plate on the front of my scooter, go ahead, I'll still bash
elbows with anyone if I have to.
Next week will be my column I've done for a few years, the traditional "Christmas
Wishes" and I think Lve got some good ones. Well, people, my deadline is up, I must
go away to the office while still recovering from what was the finest exhibiition of
racing I've ever seen in this country when the Trans-AMA and the Inter-Am stars
clashed at Saddleback. America, we've got a ways yet to go!
