Larry Wilburn blends into the tank on fast straight. By David Swift 500cC Expert pacesetter Jim Connolly assumes serni-erouch for streamlining as he pilots his Greeves off the Adelanto launching pad. ADELANTO, CALIF., Nov. 22,1970Larry Wilburn took top honors as Open Expert in the eigh t-lap main event at the IT Scrambles held here by the Simi Valley M.C. At the starting line, the racen blipped throttles nervously waiting for the starter. Front wheels bobbed up and back while everyone, including the starter, grew impatient. Everytime he moved, a couple of riders jumped the line. One man, then another, is moved back. Another false start. A man is turned around. A sloppy start that is flagged. Then a better one. After two laps Ron Powell crashes hard, nearly breaking his leg. Another start, and the race looks good. Wilburn has been out front throughout this fiasco and was declared winner when Powell's bike reacted violently coming out of a power slide causing him to crash even harder. He lost consciousness for three minutes, but didn't seem to be hurt. Mike Hannon powered his Triumph to a super-easy Open Amateur win, fmishing the last lap with one hand on his hip and giving folks a "Where'd everybody go?" look. The action for second place saw five riden really mix it up. Neil Winston and Bud Wall were eventually the next two over. The two top sidehacker teams were never more than a few feet apart; the action was a show-stealer. The Jim Moffitt - Clay Erickson teamed jumped into the lead in all three races. Only in the second contest did Jack Moffitt and Nick Sotenos get around them. Moffitt - Ereckson, decked out in spiffy orange-and-white matching leathers, were the overall winners followed by Moffitt - Sotenos, who seemed to look more like classic movie villains. (See cover of Cycle News, Nov. 17,1970.) Scott Smith worked a doubled shift, taking both the 125 and 250 Expert classes. He won the latter aboard a Yamaha twin that screamed. Tom White, the new HRA No.1, was right behind waiting for a mistake that never came. A 500 Expert, Jim Connelly, grabbed the lead right away and held on to it. Meanwhile, Ed Mitchell was working his way up .through the pack in good style, eventually getting around Sandy Armstrong for second. Young Danny Hockie, fourth as " 250 Expert, won the sparsely populated 200 Expert event, both aboard Ossas. Diane Connelly followed husband Jim's adVice, taking the Powder Puff. After each main event, the winnen would get to power into a corner, posing for a photograph that would go on the trophy. A.nice touch by the Simi Valley M.C., and a good way to end a good day. Glenn Redding, the dude that runs things at Adelanto, would like to squelch the rumor that there is no point run at Adelanto next Sunday. It's still on.
