en MC GILLIVRA Y BREAKS TRA CK RECORD By Marty McGillivray WILLOW SPRINGS, CALIF., Oct. 18, 1970 - After an off week at Carlsbad last weekend,John McGillivray rolled to overall victories in both the Open GP and Heavyweight Production events Sunday at Willow Springs Raceway. Besides winning both the heat and main races, McGillivray rode the fastest lap ever on a production motorcycle at Willow Springs. He was clocked at 1:42.5, which broke the old record by more than 1.5 seconds. The race was strictly a two man affair between McGillivray's BSA and Steve McLaughlins' new Honda 4. Although the new Honda was fast, the BSA seemed to be handling much better, enabling McGillivray to go much deeper into the comers. McLaughlin was able to hold off the BSA for three laps, but on lap four the BSA rider took t!le Honda coming down the hill and never looked back. After the early dicing the BSA began to pull away, and had a comfortable lead at the end. In the Open GP event it appeared there would be a very tight race between the N orton of McGillivray, and Don Emde's very fast 350 Yamaha. The heat race saw the Norton wiI,lning but barely. The main race saw the same situation shaping up when, on lap four Emde stopped going into turn one and returned to the pits. This left the race up to McGillivray and McLaughlin, who finished in that order. Despite his troubles on the 350, Emde did win races on both his 250 Yamaha, and his 100 Hodaka. In the 250 race he was the class of the field, but further down in the pack, Alan Thompson put on quite a show. After starting last, Thompson got his Yamaha moving and picked his way through the pack, narrowly missing third behind Emde, Christopher, and Roche. Pat Evans continued his winning ways. He had overall victories in the 125-200 GP, and 250 Junior race. He also took victories in his classes in the Light, and Heavyweight Production classes. The next road race will be at Carlsbad on Nov. 8. This will be followed by the' third annual International Road RAce at Orange County International Raceway, on 'November 20-21. A new record was set in 50cc Class 11 class by Chris Anderson on an Italjet Vampire. Chris won his class, and lapped Willow Spring at 2 min. 13 sec., cutting six seconds off the existing record. The first heat saw White headed for what appeared to be an easy win until Stanford came alive and came through with what looked to be a photo fmish. Mason was second however. Mason blasted through to the lead in the second holding off Stanford's attempts to get around him. This time, White was left with the thkd spot. In the third Qloto Stanford wasn't running second to anyone any more and got loose to go on for the win. Andy Skeel came out in style and rode to a very convincing win in the Amateur·Expert moto. Andy had to settle for third in the final go just to make sure the bike would finish because of valve problems. George Gillespie was second and has also given the big boys a lap time record to shoot for. Tonv Denius and Skeel had the record for a 41 second lap and George in the third heat came up with a 39.4. Larry Stapleton was thkd. Bill Goff rode himself to a Perris Amateur rating as he picked up his fourth trophy. Bill almost had three in a row but teammate Bruce Prior took the third win.
