The pair rode together and quite literally cruised along through the moto, so thoroughly did they outclass the field. The two CZ riders attempted to cross the finish line simultaneously, but the AMA scorers decided that Lackey was a few inches ahead of his partner. In the last race of the day, Jeff Smith demonstrated the English way of winning motocross. His style was completely free of the mid-air crossups and wheelies that characterize his American and European counterputs. Smith is extremely efficient and never appears to be going fast. Lindstrom, Defeo and Bob Thompson made very earnest efforts to catch Smith, but it was not to be done. Smith remarked in the winner's circle that he was "Quite tired", but that was all. Ossa mounted, Bob Thompson, was first American, rmishing fifth overall. Thompson now has 535 points toward the AMA motocross championship, followed by Jimmy Weinert and Brian Kenny with 520 points apiece. Brad Lackey was awarded 400 points for his Support class victory. Mornings have produced a foggy mist which has often not burned off till noon or later, producing even temperatures and soft ligh ting. Ideal conditions for racing in general and mo tocross in particular. The track was absolutely free of dust, and competitors found it safer than last year's rocky hazardous track. Pepperell, until this year the first ,of the Inter-Am scenes, was relegated to second but retained a full field of Inter-Am competitors. No prominent riders had been injured at Copetown or Elkhorn, so the stage was set for some good action. U.S. hopes were high, with Higgins, DeSoto and Bettencourt committed to the Inter-Am series by their sponors. The Trans-AMA did not have a bad affect on the Inter-Am entries. Also at Pepperell, though not following the entire series, were Peter_ Lamppu, Ron J eckel, the Vincent brothers, and others who had made top positions in local qualifying events. Police were directing traffic as far as five miles away, cars were parked solidly for two miles and walking persons contributed further to the size of the event. This year's was the largest crowd ever - 12,000 - and they more than filled the new spectator and parking areas around the track. In the support heats, a large field of u.s. and Canadian riders provided plenty of action. Bob Williams turned in the best performance of the day, breaking a piston while leading in the tiTst moto, then winning the second one convincingly. In the International Motos, it was Kring, followed by Aberg. Kring is a real crowd pleaser, flying low over most of the track. Ake Jonsson took third on his Maico, and could be the dark horse of the entire series. Behind these three was another Husky-Husky-Maico trio of Hammargren, Hallman, and Willey Bauer. These riders provided a tight grouping of rooster trailers throughout the third moto. In the final International Moto three Americans fought for top placing Lamppu, Higgins, and DeSoto. DeSoto began in fourth and was going strong, with Lamppu and Higgins farther back. Higgins moved up and bad luck hit DeSoto - his exliaust pipe cracked and he began to lose power. The crack moved around and the expansion chamber fell off. Exit John DeSoto, and a rme performance, DeSoto and Higgins should provide some real battles in this series, and where they will stand when they get to California is anybody's guess.
