on N " .." ' - U By checking the valve clearance before removing the Winkle Cap, and then measuring the th ickness, you can replace it with the proper cap. The Winkle Caps come in sizes from 2mm to 3.1mm. The next step is to clean and regap the ignition points. A piece of 180 grit flexstone, available from an auto parts store, will work to polish them up. If badly pined, tlley should be replaced. The degree wheel adaptor must be installed cin the left hand side, under the large hex plug. The end of the crankshaft is threaded to accept ao 8' mm bolt. If this plug is tight, a linle leverage applied to the tool will help. With the degree wheel in position, find top dead center by engaging top gear and rotating the rear wheel, using a ruler or small screwdriver in the plug hole. Keep 'in mind that this TOC must be on the compression stroke.. . With piston at TOC and the pointer at '0', you are now ready to time the ignition. By using the rear wheel with top gear engaged, the engine can be rotated to check timing. Remember to back up the engine beyond the correct timing and then come up to it. This takes out all the backlash of the gears for correct timing. Install a wire pointer and position the '0' on the degree wheel in line with it and 'lock down the wheel. Now go back and check for Top Dead Center again and check the pointer to see that nothing was disturbed. Check your manual to see if the timing is given for 'retard' or 'fully advanced' position. If 'fully advanced', you will have to lock the advance mechanism open with a sma II washer to get the correct timing. Using a 'Buzz Box' as shown, or some other system of showing when the contacts open, set the timing according to the specs for your particular model. A continuity light or an ohmmeter can be used for timing with assurance of being correct. After the timing has been set, it is a good idea to double check it to be on the safe side.
