ITheIlolne Workshop u o ~ w Z ~ U ~ Ask anyone who has ever owned a Ducati and he will either swear by the machine or swear at it. If you look further, you would find that those who swear at it were the victims of one of the major faults in the motorcycle industry, a lack of qualified mechanics. The Ducati single overhead cam engine is probably one of the most precision engines on the market today, and now that they've put their "DESMO" engines out for the public', this is even more so. The main trouble with a Ducati that By Rod Breaker the average rider runs into is with it being out of tune. And when he looks into the valve covers to adjust the valves and finds no adjustment he usually gives up. Tuning the 250cc model, shown here, is not a hard task and with the investment into a dial indicator, it can be performed at home by a do-it·yourselfer with a small knowledge of mechanics. (Signature of editor, publisher, business manager or owner) Thomas R. Culp Removing the gas tank is an easy job, and it will make the rocker box covers easier to get at and remove the metric allen screws that secure them. If you tear the gaskets, they should be replaced, as it will cause a messy oil leak. The valve clearance is checked with the piston positioned at top dead center on the compression stroke. Check it against the specs for your model, and adjust if necessary. Most important in doing a good job is to have the correct tools. If you intend to attack the machine with pliers and a crescent wrench, you might as well hang it up. This particular degree wheel is a Triumph tool, and is simple to adapt out of an 8mm bolt. If no adjuster is present, yours is probably the same as this model and the valve must be levered down to remove the Winkle Cap. CAUTION: you must tum the engine 90 degrees before levering the valve to avoid fouling a valve against the piston. Move the piston forward to remove the intake valve and backward for the exhaust. If the leverage is applied carefully, pressure on the valve collar will move the valve enough to let you take out the button. R.D. SPORICYCLES Internal springs for Maico forks.
