Following his win at Sacramento, where he clinched the 1970 Grand National Championship, Gene Romero on his 650cc Bonneville ran away from the rest of the field in the 20-lap halfmile dirt track race at Ascot Park. Romero moved into the lead on the third lap and was never headed. He also set the fastest time of the day in his preliminary.
