The unsanctioned event featured two-man teams running on either one or two motorcycles, with a rider change required in each of the three motos, but no specifications of how many laps each rider must complete, a Le Mans start also added to the fun. The course ran through a sandy creek bed, dry except for two crossings about one and a half feet deep and a short section through the shallows of the creek. The only complaints came from a few of the riders who had failed to properly waterproof their bikes in spite of the flyers which promised a very wet Huff Blows House Down race. Most unusual of all was the skill with which the motocross was organized. Not a hitch developed all day, in direct contrast to most Northern California events. The only .nJury occurred in unauthorized goofing·around behind the pits; this was fortunate as much of the course was inaccessible to the ambulance. Fira' -American Full Cove, H.lm.t THE MOST COMPLETE LINE OF THERMOPLASTIC HELMETS As the race was promoted for fun instead of a promoter's profit, it was possible to turn back 100% of entry fees in the A (money) class and to give out trophies of unusually high quality in the B classes. The club even gave out free beer after the racing was over. This type of promotion can keep the sport healthy and growing. In the first moto of the combined 125cc/250cc A race, the 125cc Mike McGowan/Dennis Holcomb team lost flTst place when Holcomb's Sachs watered out and had to be pushed for a long distance. In the other two motos, both riders used McGowan's Buitaco and came out on top. Tom Steltike and Steve Silverthorne rode Buitacos to second in 125cc A. Tom Jay and Doug Westwood (both on CZ's) took the 250cc A money. CZ's were also ridden to victory in the Open By Loretta Davidson TURLOCK, CALIF., Sept. 18, 1970 Ray Huff used all his ability tonight in a Sportsman Short Track struggle put on by the Westside Eagles M.C. and his efforts paid off with a pair of first places in Expert competition. The Yamaha rider from Modesto gra bbed his first victory in the 125-200cc Main by edging out Neil McDannald, who was also at the throttle of a Yamaha. Later, old man Huff did it again in the 250cc Main and this time against some of the top riders in the district. Carl Yerby was in close pursuit for second while Stan Anderson held third. This was the first of a series of three Friday night races put on by the Westside Eagles at the Turlock Fair Grounds. The action continues on the 25th and ends in a showdown on Oct. 2. For a flTst attempt at short track, the club did a fine job. (Results on page 22) IITRESTED IN WINNING?
