Dead lan's Point Gets labor Day Workout Story by Dave Brown Photos by Bob Rasmussen some consistent finishes to nab second. The 125 class was split into three divisions. The first division was a win for Yamaha mounted Joe Stout with Sachs mounted Richard Protich managing second overall. The second division win went to Stephen Merkel, also Sachs mounted. John Rathbun maneuvered his Penton to second overall. The third division looked like a Bultaco ad, with that brand garnering the first three places. Charles Mott pushed his BuL to an overall win, with Louie Dunn following in for second for the day. The newly fonned 100-125 Senior division saw plenty of action and a bit of place swapping. Ron Matheny stayed out in front long enough to win the 100 class on his Suzuki, with John Gronek keeping his Hodka well pLaced for second. Duane Brown managed some good placings in the 125 Senior class to win for the day on his Penton' with Don Reynolds coming down from Ridgecrest to race his Penton to second. Bob Martin brought out his Montesa for a convincing win in the first division of 250 Juniors. Much pLace swapping and dropping out back in the pack allowed this writer to sneak in for second. The s!'cand division of 250 Juniors 5. DEADMAN'S POINT, Sept. 6, 1970 One of the largest crowds ever to show ~ up for the races at Deaman's Point carne w out this Labor Day weekend. There Z were 200 riders and almost 400 paid ~ spectators and they were all treated to a U beautiful day and some excellent racing. ~ The weather was a comfortable 80 degrees with a ligh t wind and everyone seemed to enjoy the day and the racing and all the riders enjoyed the track. Promoter Bob DressLar gave everyone a reprieve mudwise with only one mudhole and he even forgot to fill it. He must have felt badly after the quagmire (Mother Nature's) at the previous race. The first division of 100's saw Mike Slaton ride his Bultaco to first overall with some excellent racing but John Burr aboard his new Honda didn't give Mike any room to rest. He almost took Slaton at th e finish in the second moto and earned a well deserved second for his efforts. The new Honda SL100's are showing up in ever increasing numbers and th'ey doing well for themselves, are considering most of them are stock. Division two of the 100's saw the Honda brand in first, second and fourth with Gary Poppet racing his Honda to an overall win. Bob Kvammen managed ~ ., ". was a win for CZ mounted Fred Roberts with Bob Hufnagle racing his Husky to second. The third division saw a lot of place swapping with Bill Bassett emerging on top aboard his C.Z. - Bill drives up each race day, all the way from San Diego. Mike Faulkner,'another regular, brought aut his brand new Husky to take second, even though he had some problems getting used to the bike. Division four fell to the Husky of Don Webb with Roscoe Woody keeping his Mon tesa far en ough up to cap ture second, with third going to the consistent Bob Crandall aboard his Ossa. In the 500 Junior class, Division I, Ken Ratzloff rode his Montesa to fIrst overall after Jeff Sexton took a hard spill in one of the 250 motos. Jeff was slowed sligh t1y in the later motos and could only garner a second overall. The second 500 division was another first place trophy for Layman Gattis aboard hjs Husky. John Rathburn managed to stick it out for second place to match his second in the 125 division. The 250-500 Senior race saw some of the best racing of the day.
