BAST RETURNS WITH A BANG By Mike Capalite rilu~v; b.j! yenrns Git~ne COSTA MESA, Aug. 28, 1970 - It looks like the Steve Bast,Rick Woods rivalry is back in business at the Orange County Fairgrounds as Steve has returned early from his stint at racing in England. After some heavy racing in his heats, Steve was disqualified in the Handicap Main Event for cutting into the infield, but came back to cop the Scratcl\.Main. The Match Race this week was a brother event with Bruce Haserot pitted -against' his brother Greg. It was close all the way with'both of them holding the lead twice in the two laps with a drag race ,for the finish line which saw Bruce ace out Greg by inches at the checkered flag. The Third Division Main again had its share of spills this week. As this class is where the new riders have to start, it gets rather hectic at times. It was Scott Sivadge leaping to the forefront at the start, but a new rider out for the first time jumped into second and started pushing him for the lead. Dan Carlton was showing good control and it appears that in no time at all he will be moved into the second division. Dan was not able to catch Scott although he dogged him the entire race while Bob Willits worked in to third as Dennis Cunningham, Larry Chase and Rich Richards ran into adhesion problems. . Speaking of moving up in class, it appears that Billy Grey is ready to move out of the Second Division as he seems to have found the system for this track. He always goes good on a larger track, but this oval always seemed to deal him fits until the last two weeks when he has settled down for a real smooth race. DU:y: ~~~,pri.!if! frG~ !..~e middle of the pack to take the lead i:': t..~e ~ecoiid division main as he had done in his heat and after taking the lead 'away from Frank Roseberry, he moved it on out and although Chuck Hatcher moved up into second, he was unable to put any pressure on Grey for the lead as Billy took the checkered flag to the plaudits of his fans who still remember him as the youthful 'Bud Anderson' of the "Life With Father" television series. Third spot went to Frank Roseberry while james Foxe hung in there for fourth. . The Handicap Main Event promised to be a real battle as both Woods and Bast were back on the 60-yard line. When the gate went up, both Steve and Rick were off the line so quick that they both had to shut off to keep from colliding with Mike Bast who took off from the 50-yard line. Steve took the inside and passed brother Mike but as he dove into the comer, his slide was a little too much and as he accelerated, the machine jumped the inside rail coming out. Although Steve merely was only about a foot inside the rail, he accelerated along the infield and jumped the rail back onto the track, but in doing so, he passed a couple of riders. Although Steve did a superb job of handling the machine when it went into the infield, the referee ruled him disqualified as he had gained an advantage by his entry into the infield although it was not intentional. As this decision was not made until the race was over, Steve held in and AND Maico Parts moved in to second place behind Terry. Graham who had taken the lead at the start and was working hard at holding it ~ !.~~ way. H~ ~:!9 done a superb jo~. of it so far and although ~t:'.'... ~~'~ ~~SJl1Jlg him he was able to keep his cool and kept the lead all the way for the win as he crossed the line ahead of Steve while Woods had moved up into third place with john Fishburn fourth and Mike 3ast fifth. Steve was able to get a little better acceleration and they came out side by side with Bast getting into the corner first and coming out def'mitely in the lead, Although Woods was using the power as oeif' ~~ £ould, SteY~ was holding the inside line in good Shape and taking the short way around and took it for the win with Woods second and Cody third with Mike Bast fourt~ (Results on page 26) With the disqualification, all the riders moved up a notch. jim Anderson, who had ridden beautifully in both his heat and Semi got in [rouble just once and found himself in last place, but he said he won't make that mistake again. The Scratch Main could have been anybody's race as it lined up the Bast brothers, Woods and Bill Cody. Most of the speculation was on either Woods or Steve Bast with Cody f'mishing third. The speculation was even between Steve and Rick. Rick had beaten him in the Scratch Semi, but Steve had beaten Woods in the Handicap Main, although disqualified, he had none-the-less beaten him, so it was a race to watch as Woods drew the pole position. As the gate went up, Rick shot off the line and into the corner first, but the machine seemed to have a fantastic amount of power and as Rick tried to accelerate, he drifted wide. This was all Steve was waiting or as he crossed back under Woods and took the lead on the inside. Suddenly the fans were on their feet, as Rick had slid wide, he had drifted out into the deep cushion thrown to the outside and the wheel got a bite and Woods shot down the back straight and passed Steve to get into the comer frrst, but the same thing happened as he came out wide, Steve came under him. Again the terrific acceleration in this machine came to Rick's aid as he again passed Steve on the outside. . As they went into the comer again, the crowd was going ape as it could see the same thing happening, but this time, AND Maico Accessories AT Orange County Cyde 205 N.
