Around and around they went, with Grossi increasing his lead. But while Grossi was doing his thing, a cordon of yellow shirted south riders was beginning to form behind him. West was neatly holding down second, while Rapp, Blackwell, and Cements were close bhind. And that's the way they finished. West's bike fouled. just before the checkered flag, and the four south riders came slowly across the line en masse. It looked good for the south. but no one was sure until the results were hastily calculated and announced: South 164. North 149. All in all, it was a spectacular weekdnd of racing. The events were well organized by track manager, Claua Nielsen, and the track was a 1000% improvement over conditions at the July Viking Series. The two event series concludes next week at Bay Mare, with Sportsman classes going on Saturday and the team events on Sunday. , (Results on page 26) Qra~-t PROFESSIONAL ~~~ SAFETY HELMETS ,.. .- BauDlann IDlproYin, (Continued from page 4) which Baumann's brakes locked on a tum wtuJe travelmg llW mph, thus throwing him against a wall, crushing his helmet. It has been learned since that time, however. such was not the case at all. Several eye-witnesses, including Grant and Hurley Wilvert, the racer running second to Baumann at the time- of the accident, state that Art was traveling considerably slower (with estimates between 30 and 70) and that he did not crash into a wall because there is no wall at Vaccaville. It is believed that Baumann slipped on an oil spill ~ich had occurred several laps earlier when another bike blew an oil line. But Grant does not fully support this. "It appeared to me that Art lost control slightly and adjusted while going into the turn. He may had adjusted a bit too much. As to the oil. he had passed the spill twice already. as did nearly all other riders on the track, and I don't think it was the whole problem." Ron Grant was also the fINt person to reach the unconscious Baumann and he states, ''The Buco he was wearing did not break. split. or even crack. If you saw the helmet. you'd swear the rider had gotten up and walked away uninjured." This statement is supported by Skip Van Leeuwen. this area's representative for Buco helmets. "We have checked Art's helmet out thoroughly to find any reason for him having sustained his head injury. We can find none. There is only a small scratch on the outside and no dents on the inside." Baumann was taken out of the intensive care ward at the hospital and placed in a private room because he was creating a disturbance by continuoualy talking during conscious moments. Only his close friends and family can visit but his condition is such that he has no knowledge of who he's talking to. "He believes," says Grant, "that he got in an accident at Willow Springs." Court Abuse KERN COUNTY, CALIF. - Doug Jones and three friends went to Bean Canyon on the edge of the California desert April 11 for some trail riding. Encountering a Deputy Sheriff on the way, they asked if a portion of land were open and told by him that it was. but ·that the landowner would be closing it to trail riders presently, as he was becoming upset with the traffic. Motoring a little farther, the four riders met a Deputy Sheriff named Martin Badabi who advised them that the trail was closed from that point and asked for their names and addresses so that he could record the fact that they had been so' informed. The four men filled out the little cards the officer gave them and went away to ride where it was permitted. Recently they each received a summons for "trespassing on private land." Those little cards. Bail for not appearing to answer the charges would be $65 each. Bail if they appeared would be $120 each. DougJohns feels that the court is being misused in an attempt to persecute innocent citizens, A representative of the Kern County Court said 150 motorcyclists were cited in the same manner. If any reader was also issued a citation like Doug Johns and his friends, Doug asks that they call him to help squelch this abuse before it goes any farther. His number is (714) 870-1380 days and (714) 528.{)046 evenings. Cycle News will be observing the case. AMANotes... THE MOST COMPLETE LINE OF THERMOPLASTIC HELMETS WORTHINGTON. OHIO.
