~ (Continued from page 4) ' l,Baumann Experiences Y.ictory, Injury in AFM Road Races By Ph11Up Pascoe VACAVILLE, CALIF., Aug. 23, 1970Here on the road from San 1"rancisco to Sacramento was the scene for the AFM Northern Chapter's Road Race this Sunday. The track -- a notorious fairing breaker- - consists mostly of very fast sweepers combined with a track surface comparable to that of Ascot or Santa Rosa - - extremely rough to say the least. A good set of Goodyears, Cerlanl's and a well braced frame are a neccessity if you want to stay uPright., In the 250cc G.P. Event it was Art Baumann who led from flag to flag on his Yamaha TD2. Jimmy Deehan a usually strong contender on his Kawasaki seemed to be suffering from mechanical problems and droPped from second in the flr st lap to fourth by the end of the race. Dave Scott on a Yamaha held off the rest of the fleld to take second six seconds behiDd Baumann. Started in the traditional Le-mans style was the 250, 500 and Open Production Event. John McGilvray riding a BSA Rocket TTl stormed his way to a convincing victory. Turning lap times better than the preceed1ng G.P. Event, he fought his way through the field of 38 riders from second to last position at the start to win by a healthy margin over the usual star, George Kerker, in one of the best ridden races of the day. As a courtesy to the BSA factory it should be noted that this same machine-entirely' street stock except for some very flne tuning--won the 250 mile production race at Vacavllle a llttle over a month ago in the able hands of John Me Gilvray and Myram Kitchen. The win today by McGilvray will no doubt cllnch the deal with BSA, who has been con- Mikkola Sweeps Pair LAGUIEPIE, FRANCE, Aug. 16, 19~0 - Finland's Heikki Mikkola has been on a tour since returning from the Viking Series in America. Today he bested many of Europe's finest by winning this counry's biggest international motocross event. . The small Fin grabbed the victory when Joel Robert pulled out of the lead WIth a flat tire. It was the second time in as many Sundays that he has won while battling Robert for fIrSt. Last Sunay, he propelled his Husky to victory in the Finnish 250cc Motocross GP held in Hyvinkaa, Finland. At that time, Robert fmished secondand fi:led a protest which stated that Mikkola had made a faulty pit stop, thereby breaking the rules. The protest was refu.ed, however, and Robert remained in second place. The GP was for world championship points and the finish by Robert inched him to within one point of Suzuki teammate Sylvain Geboers, the current leader on the world championship points table. Geboers has 85 and Robert 84. sidering giving him a factory BSA TTl G.P. bike -- and w1U make him a force to be reckoned with in the 500 and Open G.P. Class events of the future. The 35Oc,c Class of the above event was as usual, dominated by the Yamaha Y&s with Jerry Greenewlnnlng the class and a fourth overall. The final event of the day, the 500 and Open G.p. was dominated by the Kawasaki brigade, who took the first three places overall. An interest1I)g sidelight to this event was Cycles Unllm1ted Kawasaki from Bakex:stleld, whose regular star, Mike Lane did not show uP, se Kerker was offered the ride. After a hasty consultation with rival Art Baumann on the do's and don't's of riding a two-stroke 70 HP machine after riding nothing but four - stokes all his life he decided to take the ride and as the results show managed a comendable tblrd overall. Unfortunately the Suzuld 500--withArt Baumann in the saddIe--crashed badly on turn three when his brakes locked whlie way out in front and another sure win for Suzuki and Baumann was lost. All riders and sPectators hope that Art was not hurt badly and will recover quickly from any injuries he sustained. Hurly Wilvert from Norm Reeves Honda in Long Beach won the eventfrom Jimmy Deehan in second and Kerker in tblrd. John McGUvray scheduled to ride his G.p. Norton found.he had a nat 'three minutes before the race began, took the Beeza TTl out and came home first in the 750 class and fourth overall even after being flagged in and warned of a minor violation. The next AFM Road Race is scheduled for Sept. 13 at Orange County'Raceway where a large turnout is expected. The rather pro.aic title of the course is "Small Engine Service 34A" and it is to be taught by Da:vid R. Lamo~eux, who .has exten.ive experience in the motorcycle field. Lamoureux IS employed m the day time by Holman, Moody, Stroppe Inc. and count••ixteen years experience in the building of racing engines. . . . . The class is a two semester course and reward for completIOn IS SIX college credit and a better than-even-chance of finding a job in a bike shop. The student will also receive a "Certificate of Completion" which .tate., "Student has completed 216 hours of training in small engine .ervice." Midnight Enduro Nears TORRANCE-, CALIF., Aug.,st, 1970 - In conjunction witl) their IT event of August 30th, the Prospectors M.C. is introducting a new innovation. Beginning at midnight in the a.m. of August 30th, they will hold their first night enduro. An 80-mile ~ourse running through the Adelanto/El Mirage area, using fire roads and easy trials, providing a nice ride and something new for those who have never ventured away from the fire at night. Beginning and terminating in the approximate area of the Prospectors IT at Adelanto, this will provide' a nice weekend outing with lots of riding. This non-sanctioned run will be a benefit run with all profits derived being used to support a three-man Prospector Team at this year's ISDT events in Spain. The start will be limed from Adelanto and 395. First riders leave at 12:01 A.M., six riders a minute. Sidehacks are welcome, and although the Prospectors have ordered ~ full moon, lighting equipment is highly recommended.
