Allen Kenyon, who won the 650cc
feature, along with the six -foot Perpetual TroPhy, in 1968 and 1969, was not
on hand for this year's race, as commlttments to the BSA factory necessitated
his racing in the two East Coast Nationals
this weekend. '
One of the best races of the day was in
the 350 Expert Main, when Craig Fillmer
of San Jose snuck his Honda in on the final
turn of the final lap to take the checkered
flag.
Another close race occured in the 650
Novice Main. Triumph mounted Tony
Gonzales of Gilroy forged ahead, when the
leader dropped it coming out of the last
turn on the final laP. Gonzales managed
to stay in front, but only barely •P, Leuty,
who had worked his way uP from a secondlap fifth place, almost nosed under in a
photo finish.
Paul Johnson had a relatively easy time
of it in the 250Cc Expert Main, with John
Genna running second and Mike Renslow
in third. Two heavy duty competitors
from the northern area in this class, Jim
Foley and John Green, opted not to ride
Salinas this year, as it has just fallen
under the jurisdiction of AMA District 35,
and the two are in hot contention for
scrambles honors in District 36.
All in all there was some good racing
this year at Salinas, although the death of
Bud Kneass, as well as the numerous
other injuries tended to overshadow
everything, including the very worthy
Cerebral Palsy fund. Nor, we suspect,
does the good racing impress the family
and friends of Bob Garretsen, who is
still in a coma after an injury sustained
at the event last YeaI:.
