I Perfect.olo-cross Radng, In Washinglon By Kevin Hill ZILLAH, WASH., August 16, 1970 Fierce compbtition, 90 degree heat, excellent course, good dust cOJltrol and superb organization were the ingredients for a perfect day of racing at this Sunday's River Ridge Association Motocross near the banks of the Yakima River. Saturated by piped-in water for days before the race made the course nearly dust-free; the four water crossings also helped. Everyone got enough practice on the challenging course since it was open till well past noon with the fIrst race off the line promptly at one. When it was announced that there were to be three fifteen minute motos for each of s,ix classes, some riders expressed doubts as to the club's ability to finish them all in one day.. However, by seven o'clock all races were completed and trophies handed out. In the 14 and under age class, limited to 125cc bikes, Ken Sears pulled off the overall win without winning a single moto. His consistent rides on his 125 Bultaco paid off as he won out 'over speedy Chris Clayton on a Yamaha and Dave Rowe on another Bultaeo. Jim Noble totally dominated the 100cc class with his very strong Hodaka over a whole herd of sunilar machines. Winning every moto wih ease, Jim pleased the crowd with his long wheelies on the starting straight on nearly every lap as he shift,d from second to third. Jumping on his second bike, a punched out Hodaka,Jim proceeded to repeat his performance in the 125cc class, this time with somewhat stiffer competition. Sachs mounted Marc Jones came up with second over the spectacular riding of third pice fInishbr, Norm Kopp on a Yamaha. Another Yamaha Ace, Jim Pomeroy, took a heavy endo on a fast bumpy section and, while not hurt badly, DNF'ed the, moto and was eliminated from any chance of placing w.ell. Lee Simmons led a small parade of Yamahas to take a win in the 175cc class over Oon Essary and Randy Stewart. Things really got exciting in he 250 class as Ricky Poulin kept his Maico out in front of hard-<:harging Jim Pomeroy for a first moto win. It was a terrific duel between these two until the last couple of laps when Jim's Yam!lha gave up and Ricky came in with a big lead over second place. Apparently, the Yamaha had serious troubles since the next two motos were all Poulins' with second going to another Maico rider, Clift Gets, 3 At Short fra.clc By I,.eana Cram RAINIER, WASH., Aug. 8, 1970- Dave Clift rode three different brands of machines to a pair of victories and a close runner-1lP sport in exciting short track action spopsored by the Rainier Sports, man's M.C. tonight. Clift, mounted on a Sachs, had a possible triple- win night destroyed by the veteran of the track this year, Rich Durward (Kaw). The pair won their respective heats and in the A Maln, Clift got off the line first with Durward back il\ the pack. As Durward hacked away at the pack, Clift retained his advantage until the next to the last lap when the two traded positlons and Durward ducked under the checkered first with Clift second. . It was Clift again in the Open A Maln but this time Don Lipp's Triumph supplied the pressure that nearly topped Clift's. Malco. In his heat, Clift fell victim to Jim Grace (BSA). Larry Kiesel was the only other A Maln wlnner of the night when he powered his Bultaco to a first in the 200Cc Class. The night's racing was one of the best ever here with 180 riders finding the action fast on the nearlY duSt-fre!! track. Due to the large turnout, the Rainier Sportsman's M.C. may soon dispense with practice except for new riders only. However, tonight's races were still c.omp1eted in four hours. (Results on page 26) day was a good example as the two Yamaha teammates were nose to tail almost the whole race. Out of the last turn and down the final straight they came for a fantastic, ,photo-finish drag-race. Young Pomeroy came up with the decision in this one as well as the two previous motos for a clean sweep and overall win. Second place, of course, went to Norm Kopp who was followed by Loren Schoofey and Allen Brozzoitt-, both riding Maicos. Congratulations are in order for thb fin e efforts of the River Ridge Association in putting on such a well-organized day of racing. The next race on their schedule is set for September 13, 1970. (Results on page 26) Don McIntire and third to Bob Strange on a Montesa. A n;al Ime showing was , made by CZ rider, Lynn Omohundro, of LeGrande, Oregon, who overcame a mediocre IlI'St moto with two strong thirds for an overallfourth place trophy. The, Open ",lass was a field day for Yamaha riders Jim Pomeroy and Norm Kopp since the usual Maico threat of Richard Poulin was not present. The Senior Poulin did not race today but kept very busy with' flagging and other chores as he is very active in the River Ridge Association. Some terrifIc duelling developed between Pomeroy and Kopp in this cla,ss ' for some of the day's best and closest racing. The third and last moto of the Jensen's Day At Los Gatos Meet By Patrice Kenyon GILROY, CALIF., Aug. 16, 1970 The usual hot weather and turn out of top riders brought a good crowd to the Los Gatos Club's 2nrd race of the season. Despite such riders as Jim Foley, Bruce Teixeria, and John Gennai - it just seemed to be Expert Jackie Jensen's day. Jackie led the 350·360 Expert from start to Imish on a 250 CZ, with John Green 2nd and Foley 3rd. Then to the amazement of some people, Jackie took another Ill'st place by winning the 250 Expert. Ja€kie led it off the line with Les Costanza 2nd, Bruce Teixeria 3rd and Jim Foley 4th. On the 4th lap Teixeria passed Costanza and had moved up enought to be right on Jackie's rear wheel. Meanwhile Foley and Costanza battled it put for 3rd, with Fofey trying every way but through Costanza. On the checkered flag it was Jensen, Teixeria, Costanza and Foley. Bob Boaz and Bill Landsborough did an excellent job in thl: 650 Expert class. The 650 Amateur was a runaway with Roy Geddis taking his BSA in for the win, Paul Karpinski 2nd and Rick . Weaver 3rd. Paul Leutv won his third straight 650 Novice Main Event. Tony Gonzales was on his rear wheel the whole race while Jim Silva worked his way from 5th to 3rd. The 350 Amateur class looked quicker than usual, with Kenny Gallagher riding his Honda to IlI'St place. Hayward's "Leaky" Lenn Mortenson was 2nd and Roger Steyding following him in for a 3rd place trophy. Soon-to-be-Expert, Pat Brown, brought his Bultaco 200 in for another super win (which should please his sponsor). Also Bultaco mounted Gary Comphel, held off Pat Henner as he rode to 2nd place. ' Yamaha mounted Pat McCaul passed Joe Marchand on the last lap of the 250 Amateur Main to take home a 1st place trophy. Gary Vanderpool and Steve Hernandez followed 'em home for a 3rd and 4th.
