Three Wins For Crank~ At Hangtown By Bruce C. Young Photo by Larry Montgomery Houchins Outduels Mulder CALISTOGA, CALIF., Aug. 15, 1970Perennial second place finisher Lloyd Houchins breezed to an easy victory past Eddie Mulder tonight at the Calistoga 'Fairgrounds. Houchins recorded fast qualifying time of the night, rode the fastest heat . and came home an easy winner in the Main. Mulder was certainly in fme form, too, riding a Tom Philips Triumph and sliding gracefully through the tums. Th e two seasoned veterans outdistanced the rest of the slim field of Experts easily and by the end of the 15 laps had accumulated nearly a straightaway lead. Houchins rode the banked grooves straight out while Mulder would pitch his mount into the tums creating a loud squeal under. the low pressure tire. Third place went to Bob Scally, aboard a Triumph, after he spent much of the Main getting around Terry Sage who was having some minor handling problems. Bruce Anderson led off the feature program with a hard drive into the first comer but on the way out Houchins went by. At the end of lap one, Mulder had also passed. From lap lOon the race got pretty strung out with Houchins and Mulder having it all their own way. The heats were little different as Houchins and Mulder were one-two in the first heat with Anderson third. Cliff Aksland beat Scally in the second heat. The Amateur Main went to Kris Bakke astride a badly misfiring BSA. Bakke came out first with Tom Phillips close in from the back row. His second place was short lived as Nick Theroux gassed up his BSA to take second place honors. Nearly 50 Novices showed up to ride and they all looked slightly down trodden when young Kenny Roberts showed up with his Jet Suzuki. Roberts had battery box problems the night before and in the second lap of practice he had it again. He and Bruce Teixeira had to wheel their motors back from the far end of the track. Teixeira was through for the night while Roberts needed repairs. In the heats, Jim Rice won the fIrst as. Roberts motor quit coming off the first tum. This made it a whole new ball game. Steve Wilson easily won the second astride a Yamaha Twin after Stan Anderson bailed in the back tum w"ile running second. . Stan had just been passed by Wilson and when Steve shut off for tum, Stan had to lay it d.own or take both of them out. In the Main it was Wilson first, with Rice putting on a last lap charge only to get wide in the last tum, for second with Jim Crenshaw third and John Ogilvie fourth.
