HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF., Aug. 9, 1970 - The Open-ElIIl8rt Class tlrst, second and third place was a batile of roaring 650 Trlumpbs. Arv1lSparks, Big Bore Champ coming out of retirement, socked it to 'em witll a first place In both the first and second motos of HRA TT action. Jim Maupin, driving full bore ott the strafghtaway into turn one on the outside sUpped ott the groove and did an end 0 In the tires. Comq back for the t1nal moto, he rode a close second onSparkll!s heels all the way, overtaldng SparIde five feet from the checkered flag giving him an overall third for tile day. BSA mounted James Russell rode both the Open Novice and Open Expert crass taking firstln the novice first moto. Sparkle and Russ.ell were battllng It out In the first open expert moto with Russell taJdng the lead until the t1nal 10 feet. Coming out of turn seven onto the strafghtaway tor the checkered flag, Russell's bikes blew a rod. Unhurt, but unhappy, Russell was out both events tor the day. Seems Russe11bas had more than his share of black luct, but a good sport and a great rider, bacII: battllng It out at the next event. The fun for the day was the backwards sweepstakes. The tlrstthreeplacesfrom each class went to the flve lap event, run backwards. Dennis Briggs, 100 Nov. first place winner, lead for one lap losing It to Yamaha mounted Rob Burg with Tom White pu.sll1ng all tile way tor a second overall. Tom White and Sparlde were turning tile track in 43 second witll the course hlgger. An accident-tree day with an ocean breeze makes for a good day at the races. ~ ..::(Results on )lIIge 22) -----...~ Bob Grossi can't really beat Jim Wilson, can he? ~he ACTION'S at1 SaOOLeSaCK ORANGE COUNTY'S IIOTOR PLAYGROUND EVENTS MOTOCROSS AUGUST 1& Antelope Ramblers Motocross AUGUST 23 August 16th - Ascol P.k CMC Motocross August 23rd - saddleback August 30th - Carlsbad Do your tune-up ridi ng on Saddleback's multi courses.
