THIRD STRAIGHT TO MERT GARDENA, CAL., August 7, 1970- Mert Lawwill won his third straight hal! mile maln event aboard his Harley-Davidson tonight. The Harley was the older version of the 75OcC, the sidevalve model, that has been the most consistent winner for Mert the past three years. Mert's partner, Mark Brelsford, - riding the newer overhead 75, teamed to give &-0 their best one- two showing of the season. Eddie Mulder returned to the oval to surprise all wfth the fastest heat race win of the night on his Triumph. He edged point leader Tom Rockwood, also Triumph mounted. Brelsford and Lawwill won the other two heat races. Gene Romero posted the second fastest time trial, behind Lawwill but a ragged start by the Starter found riders all tak1ng of! at d1f!erent times and Romero running up the back of another ma:ch1ne. This started a chain reaction with Gene going down and tak1ng Dewayne Keeter with him. Keeter was back for the re- start but Romero was assisted to the pits with a badly sprained ankle. Mulder then went on to'win the event. • Brelsford upset Lawwill to win the Dash with the continually improving amateur, John Hateley topping Lawwlll and Dave Aldana for second. Aldana replaced Romero in the four rider Dash lineup. Brelsford then tried for his second upset by leading the final for the first three laPs. Then Laww1ll took over and led the rest of the way. It was a three rider go the entire distance with Laww1ll putting on the pressure from the start and Tom Rockwood moving up through the pack after ,the early laPs. Rockwood made a bid for the win in the middle laPs, got of! the groove, dropPed back to fourth and then came on strong to come out of the last corner even with Brelsford in the race for second to the checkered flag. Mark held on by inches to give &-0 a one-two finish. Mulder, the TT spec1al1st, surprised in the heat race before taldng last in the final. But it was Jody Nicholas, the road racing spec1allst, who pulled of! not one but two surprises. Nicholas showed up to race but once again his new BSA was not on hand. Harold Allison had a spare Norton so Jody. without benefit of practice decided to give it a try. . The last minute combination produced a come from behind win in the Semi and another come from behind to finish a respectable fourth place in the 15-laP final. The Norton was not equipPed with a s~ arm frame and Jody turned in two good rides on a rigid frame to boot! Hateley was again off to one of his slow starts in the amateur heat race and again found himself starting in the back row of the 10-laP final. Again, it helped to make a better race Winner Mert Lawwill goes under Dave ~Idana. as Jolin and the Triumph came from the back to take the 1ead away from Don Emde on the sixth lap and go on for his third 'main event win in four weeks. Portland's Chuck Joyner continues to race at Ascot and continues to improve his oval track status. He was running third until engine problems forced him out late in the race. . Gary Scott was "Gone-racing" in Sturgis, So, Oak., so Kenny Roberts had it all to himself with no challenger most of the night in the novice class. The Suzuki ace again scored a heat race and main event combination to extend his overall undefeated string to nin straigbt without a loss on the hal! mlle. Carl Byers and A1 Baker, both. Yamaha mounted, did the chasing this time for second and third. Byers, the San Diego rider, is another of the fast improving first year Pro's who is getting closer to the winner,'s circle each week.
