I don't know the lIB.me of the photographer but I tblnk be should be After read1Dg the article tbat was written for Cycle News by David Smead, I became a I1ttle irritated. It seems to me that Mr. Smead is in a very small minority group that feels tbattheOmard Sports Festival Motocross was poorly presented. A lot of time and work went into setting UP that course by a club that bad, and wU1 continue to have, excellent racing events. Granted, some of the course mayhave been dusty and bumpy, but if you look at your A.M.A. rule book, I tblnk you wU1 find sometblng about .'at least 50% IIB.tural terrain (unimProved)". As for the time schedule, I would have to agree that It could have gone dt a llttle faster, but I also must add tbat I • commended for an outstaDdlng picture. The clarity and capturlDg the ellPression of tile rider was, in my opinion, almost as If I were at that race myself. MRS. RUTH SPARGAR Santa Monica, Ca1lf. PUBLICIZE SOONER I ·would l1ke to make some comments on tile current Scrables scene. Motorcycle raelng in general Is quite a famiIy sport, so tb1s letter Is in the form of a suggestlon to all scrambles oriented clubs to make It even more so. Please, please, please post your events more than four days abead of time. The Wednesday before the weekend of your YOlO• • have twltt1ed my thumbs at a lot of other raelng events. It seems awful fUnnY to me that Mr. Smead bad notblng good at all to say about the event tb1s year or last, when in fact, everybody I talked to that either spectated or raced in tb1s year's and/or last year's were basically pleased. . Could Mr. Smead's biased report be based on a persOllB.1 or business reason? PA1RICK J. NEWELL Oxnard, Ca1lf. NO PENALTIES Well, the DIstrict 37 Competition Commlttee bas done It again. All of the cbeaters at the Red Dots Hare Scrambles were let off scot free. Some Antelope Ramblers were caugbt cheating on another desert run and penal1zed, maybe they belonged to the wrong club. The competition commlttee better do their job on lI;Ie cheaters or there mlgbt not be any de!l8rt runs in the future, espectalIy when a rider signs up for a Hare Scrambles and then goes road racing. WES ANDERSON SR. Los Angeles, Ca1lf. EFFORT PRAISED I rode NORRA's Ind1aD Du!1!'s MX S\lIIday, July 26. Those who-attended are well aware of tbat ridiculous attempt to put on a race; coDfuslon and knownotblngDess were tile order of the morn1Dg. However, the day was salvaged by one Mr. Runyard who took charge and almost stnglebandedly put the motos together. I have no idea bow Mr.Runyard fits into the picture tlnanctalIy, but I persollB.Uy want to thank him for b1s efforts. Indian Dunes bas the potential to be a fine MX park, but only if more reSPODSible and lnformed people are sponsorlDg the events. If tIley could locate a few lDdlvldua1s with half the energy aDd half the spirit of Runyard, our $7.s0 fees would well be wortbwb11e. DAN DELEHANT La Puente, Ca1lf. GREAT COVER I am not a motorcycle tan. ma1nly because of my age. But today I saw a copy at Cycle News aDd was very impressed with the cover pictureonAugust 4th lAue. (Tim Hart comlDg over an event Is entirely too short for fam11y plannlng. Old you ever notice bow far abead motocross events are posted in the paper? It's mostly two weeks and sometimes three weeks before tile race. Motocross mall entries us1Blly close before scrambles events are even posted. I'm a devout scrambler and would rather race a scrambles event, but rather than walt untll the last minute to plan the weekend aDd pay $5 extra for post entry at a motocross event, I'll give UP scrambles aDd go all motocross. Nearly 150 of the country's toP riders were on hand for the event, when, at tile beg1nD1ng of practice, the ,oval began to break up as the first few riders hit tile turns. Efforts to repair tile damage were fuWe, and after many meetings between off1clals • and riders, it was decided to cancel tile event and not re-schedule. Wben the overflow crowd was advtsed of the decision,.a near riot ensued, with race prnmoter J.C. AgajanlaD the target of assorted debri. Wickstrand Wins 'Climb MUSKEGON, MICH., Aug. 2, 1970 - Carl W1ckstraDd captured the 1970 AMA Class A HUlcl1mblDg ChamplonstUp Sunday with a slDgle scalding and uncontested run• 10,000 spectators watcbed the Yalesv1Ile, COIlDect1cut rider gas his Triumpb to a new bill record of 6.12 seconds. 1968 champion Earl Bowlby of Logan, Obio, was next, pusbIDg b1s BSA to a 6.33 second run, and 1969 champion Beese Wendt ftnlsbed fourth at 6.42 on b1s Glen Kyle buUt Vincent, Third was Harley-Davidson rider Jack Taylor, topplDg the bill at 6.39. Nat'l Points Changed WORTHINGTON, OIDO, July 27, 1970 - The American Motorcycle Assoc1ation bas cbaJJged the point breakdown in the $7000- $7999 bracket to correct a point dJscrepaney for riders tin! sbing second, it was announced today. The points given in the old breakdown (16) were less than tile same place ftnlsber received in a lower bracket (19). By cbanglng tile points awarded in tile bracket in question, tile AMA bas again created the same problem ...lower down the I1st of f1D1sbers, bowever. The revise point-d1str1but1on gives six points to the e1gbth place ftnlsber whereas an elgbth place fln1sber in tile $8000- 8999 bracket only recetves five. Be that as it may, bere are the new points awarded in the $7000-7999 bracket beglnnlng from first to 12th: 39, 29, 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6*, 4, 3, 2, and I. (*Possibly subject to change.) DONATIONS HELPED I would like to take tb1s opportunity to thank all the CMC riders and spectators who contributed tile more than $200 tbat belped so very much with the "expenses" after my son's serious automob1le accident last weekend in Mexico. My son, John Ewoldt, and b1s friend, Leon Autry were in very bad shape in the EnsellB.da hosPital as a result of the wreck that totaled b1s van. The Mexican offIetals clalmed tbatthe accident bad caused $500 damage to the blgbway aDd would not release them untll tb1s was paid. FortuIIB.tely, tile CMC beard about tb1s aDd lssued a plea for contribut1ons. I CllIIIIOt ellPress to those of you who contributed bow much tb1s meant to us. The boys are both home now, in ta1r shape- '1baDks to the CMC aDd tbelr riders. MR. AND MRS. JOE GUASTELLA Los ADceles, cal. LOS ANGELES, CAUF., July 31, 1970- The Los Angeles City Countll today overrode a veto by tile city's major, Sam Yarty, aDd passed an ordinance wb1ch restricts the use of two- and four-wheeled vehicles UPon privately owned property witbln the city I1mits. _Mayor Yarty vetoed the ordinance because, be said, "It did not contain certain provisions for proper enforcement by the Pol1ce Department". In a letter to the Councll vetolDg tile ord1nllJlce, Yarty also noted that, although the Chief of Pol1ce concurred in the adoption of the ordinance, ''It would not be enforceable unless it recocntzed 1I1e existence of a publ1c nuIsance at the concerned locat1on, aDd that posting and barricade requirements be made part of the ordlnance." Yarty said tbat tile ordlnance sbouId be amended to included these provisions as recommended by tile Pol1ce Chief aDd concurrred in by the Pol1ce Commission. Toc:Iay, bowever L- the Councll WllLD1mously approved the ord1naDce wb1ch prevents a person from operating a motor vehicle, includ1ng any motorcycle, trau bike, dune buggy, motor scooter, or jeep, or tile motor of these vehicles on any vacant lot, parkIDg lot, vacant property or acreage so as to disturb the peace or quiet of any ne1ghborboo:l or persoo by noise, dust, smoke or fumes caused by these motor vehicles. Sim1lar ordinances were also passed tb1s week in Orange CoUDl;y aDd in VictorvlUe, Ca1lf. However, the ordiance in Orange County also bas a stipulation that the county government wI1I atd the interested groups in searcblng, locating, aDd openIDg trails for bikers, riders, etc. The ord1nance in Los Angeles does not contain a slm1lar part, although tIlere is talk that the city ofDclals wI1I also attempt to find "etty sponsored rid1ng areas." Cycle News contacted a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and the findings of that interview can be found on the Land & Law section page .21. Cycle Land Has Trouble CARSON, CALIF., July 29, 1970 - Bob Balley, who planned to open ,his Cycle Land motorcycle park to the pubUc durlDg tile first week of August, was faced with more legal problems Tuesday nlgbt and today bas refUed an appUcatlon to open the park. The problem occurred wbeD the land, previously thought to have been owned by OI1e person, was discovered to be owned by two, aDd one section (for parldng) was under a 50-year lease. "We could have pushed through and gotten around tile problem last nlgbt," says Ba1ley, "but, \lPOII seeing the favorable reapoase from the city dtlclals, we decided to refl1e today aDd do it properly without creating W-feeI1ngs." An estimated tbree-quarters of tbe people on band for the Tuesday nlgbt meeting were in favor at Cycle Land !ncl l!cUng Tom Cosg:roye aDd Kerry AgajaDlan. Those who were not based tIleir objec:tlon 1IPOII the beUet the park would "dJsturb the sptrlts at the pets" burled in the pet cemetary adjacent to Cycle Land. "But, tbelr objectlons," says Ba11ey, "wen made the dtlc1aIs break down aDd sm1le." Another meeting wW be call1ld in tile near future to dIscnss the DeW appUcatlon, and, says Balley, "we would l1ke all those people wbo attended last n1gbt's meetIDg to return aDd brIDg a friend or two to reaUY sbow tile people are beb1Dd it." ---------(Con-tilllUM OD' page 30)
