DIEU GRABS' OPENER AT ·INDIAN DUNES A 250 Junior class rider unloads his Sultaco By Bob Hill VALENCIA, CALIF. July 26, 1970- John Dleu was the young man who surprised everyone at the first race of the newly built Indian Dunes Park on Sunday. This was John's first visit to southern California, and he made the trip worthwhile by scoring three straight victories in the 500cc Senior class. John's style was flawless and he won all three of his motos by a substantIal margin. John Maynard piloted his Maico inlo the number two position ahead of John Rice, who gave Maynard a real chase all the way to the checkered flag. Tom Rapp and his Bultaco tallied up two firsts and a third 10 sew up' the 250 class, edging out Bruce Barren and Mike Runyard. Runyard's luck was bad today, as he drowned his Montesa while crossIng the water hazard. Mike ended up in third place, as Gary Jones, who had crossed the finish line in second place, was disqualified for cutting the course. John Maynard and Bill Clements received the same penalty. The "'500 Junior division had the spectalor s on their feet, as Doug Manning battled It out with Bill Bell and C.C. Cohfamry around the dusty I.D. course. The end of the three motos found Manning on top with ·three good rides to his credit. Bell had 10 settle for the second place "brass", with Cohfamry grinding !Lcross the finish line in third. The 250 Junior class, though not quite as exciting as the Senior events, had Its share of real action. S. White kept hts head above water and beat his opponents to the drop of the flag. The water hazard claimed Its share of victims in this class. Several of the riders lost It here, and at times It was hard 10 tell one rider from the other. M. Beatty gave chase 10 M. mud pit. Davis, but was unable to overtake him by the time the 15 minute time limit had run out. Davis finished second and Beatty had to settle for third. With a small amount of entries in the 125 Junior and Senior classes, the off!- distinguish between a rider and a spectalor. There was some confusion and delay prior 10 the race, but once things got underway, the molos were run In a fairly smooth manner. No injuries were reported, and with a little more planning and some more water, indian Dunes could be an outstanding track In the future. (Results on page 22) John (MO) Maynard blasts through a loose section in hot pursuit of Mike (7) Runyard. Qualifications for the East-West teams were open to all comers. Obviously the North was just plain chicken. ........ F~ • box 216 • ~. "61801 .T.P' I"TO TH. Wi....... •• CI..CL.
