~ $ '" r.:l Jackson Takes CMC Series Win ~ r.:l c3 ;:.... U By John Shedd SADDLEBACK PARK, CALIF., July 19, 1970 --Once again, Jeff Jackson of HoUywood, piloted his Huskey to the 250Cc jun10r win; but this time It sewed UP the win in the CMC's Golden Slate Series as well. ThIs week's win didn't come as easy for Jeff as some of the others. He crashed in the first leg while taking the lead and only managed a third. In thesecondmoto he was taped UP due to a shoulder injury in the first leg, but It didn't seem ta slow him down and he still maintained his smooth style. The second leg was Jeff's all the way, but CZ rider Bob Merrick had other plans for him in the last go. Jeff was snapping at Bob'S heels on the next to the last lap, but a tremendous crash involving six bikes oCcured just past the flagman on a fast downhill section and CMC official Stu Peters very wisely cut the race one lap short. Merrick didn't ,care as it got Jackson off his back and he won the mota, and Jeff sure didn't care since he still won the class and a triP to Europe as well. The 250Cc expert-intermedIate class was really UP for grabs. Montesa mounted MIke R\lllY'Ud took the first mota without too much trouble, but he found plenty in the last two. A crash in the first turn on the second leg took out the leader, Jim Cooke, and scrambled l:h1ngs as well. John Rubcic pulled into the lead and held It untIl the next to the last lap and then. expert Bryar Holcomb sliPped by the intermedIate rider and went on to win the leg.RUII)'8l'd bad a bad start but did manage to work his . way uP to secood by the time the checker fell. ' _ The last moto belonged to BID Urban and his new Malco from the time the flag fell. Runyard was breathing down his neck all the way and the pair bad a whale of a lead over the rest of the pack. A first and two seconds was enough to give Mike the win and Urban took second and Holcomb third. John Rubcic was fourth overall and first intermedIate, but second intermediate Dave Smith earned enough points to take second place in the series and won himself a complete Hallman riding outfit. The 500cc expert-intermedIate class was a battle in all three motos between Mike Runyard (Montesa), and Pat De Benedetti (MaIco). Pat could not be contained and in all three legs It was a come from behind win for him. The two set a pace that none of the others could match, and neither gave the other a chance to catch his breath. Steve Hammer followed Runyard in for third overall and first intermedIate. ThIs event was the one the CMC decided to use to put an end to pit racing. As a result seven riders were suspended for 90 days. A couple were Runyard in action. Bill Urban leads the Expert field. experts and they also bad to forfeit their prize money for the day. The next CMC event will be south of the border, next 'week at Ensenada, Mexico. It will be a two day affa1r beg1nnIng Saturday and ending Sunday. (Results on Page 26)
