Thorwaldson Captures Hot Desert Scrambles By Dick Wright HI VISTA, CALIF. July 4, I970-Noless than 190 riders turned out for a hot Independance Day 10 the desert, and the results was a fine day for European Scrambles. Rich Thorwaldon was the victor 10 the combined Am-Ex. Open, but he had to work hard for the win. He and Larry Bergquist doubled for the lead 10 the back section of the course, Patrick's charge was good enough for second and Tom Smith and Tom Muto, both riding Huskys, picked uP a third and fourth, respectively. 10 the 250Cc Am-Ex, red· hot Tom Patrick charged to the lead 10 the early .stages, but was forced out and Jack Fraellch took over and came 10 for the win under the blazing sun. "I couldn't have gone another mUe," the exhausted and thirsty winner said. "Where's the water," and off he went for refreshments. At the half-way mark, he bad a big lead, but coming uP fast was Mike Patrick riding a Yamaha. Rich's pit crew spotted Patrick and signalled Thorwaldon to pour it on, which he did and came in with room to spare on his big Rickman. . "Man, it was hot," he mentioned after the race. "That Patrick must be an iron man. He came uP .on me with that 1lI.te charge and I had to go for all I was worth." B111 Friant (Hus) was second and Jerry Kindsvogel (Hus), third. Eric Jensen won the 125cc Am-Ex. riding a Sachs and was followed by Rich Mark (Yam) and Jeff Wright (Ric). The first race of the day on the amateru-expert course was the 100Cc AmEx. Terry Clark (H-D) charged to an early lead and held it to the checkered flag. Jack Morgan (Hod) was second and Mitch Mayes (H-D) took third. D,S. Martin took first amateur honors.
