Unbelieveable as It may seem, the y<1ung H-D rider came in second best to Butch Corder. Corder got the jump in the 15-lap MaIn and never let go even though Brelsford gave It the old college try. Butch got a slightly better bite coming off the line and was the first man to exit turn one. Brelsford dogged his rear wheel for some seven laps. When he tried to tell Butch he was there by shoving a wheel inside, Butch would blast ahead and bold a tight corner. Brelsford tried a bard line attack at one point and nearly h1gb sided for his efforts. Russ Powell and Greg Hodges were running extremely close at lile tl.me and Powell eased on by when Mark went wide. Powell held second briefly as Brelsford recovered and, sbortly thereafter, was d1s1odged from second to fourth as Brelsford again put on the bard charge. Mark Brelsford collects more gold. Mark was Mger catch up Corder and was relegated to second with Hodges in third. Brelsford bad started out the evenlng's activlties with fast qual1fytng heat tl.me and fast beat tl.me. He ran away with the trophy dash and was a sure shoe-in for the main but Corderdecided differently • Butch won his qual.1fy1ng heat by doing a classic wax job on Nick Therowy and then wtnn1ng his heat after bard luck Al Kenyon gave up the chase in lap two. His Semi was second fastest but he came off the line best in the main and that was It. Randy Baney took the ten-lap Consolation eventfrom Barry Brown who bounced his way around the slick concrete for second. John· Kellam bad an early advantage but couldn't hold the Une and he fin1shed thlrd. Jlm Foley brougbt UP the fourth spot, The Bob Barkhimer Associates races got off to a bang with a first heat crash that sent Pat Eagan to the hospital with a bad back. (Results on page 22) RAIN AND WIND GREET RENO SCRAMBLES By Steve Young RENO, NEV., June 28,1970- Nevada's capricious weather was more sulted for a MX than the TT Scrambles held by the Nevada Trailblazers, but the riders d1dn't seem tonotlce. The spr1nkl1ng rain and gusty winds thwarted many spectators and riders, but those who stayed enjoyed many fine races. The track, roughly 3/4 of a mUe in length, with a smooth jump, long straight, and many tlgbt turns was smooth-at the start, but rougbened up considerably throughout the day. The loos had the first tour of the track. Don RUdd, proving that a stock Honda can be competitive, rode well and rece1ved first place for hls efforts. He' was closely followed by Robert Buley on a Harley, but never blew his cool. The 125cc event was won by Ken Lighthouse on hls Yamaha. As with most Wlnnemuccan Yamaha's, Ken's pulled everything else so badly on the straights, that It 15 difficult to beUeve that he was in the right class. He stayed well out in front until hls closest competitor sUd n1ftily through the last corner to almost catch him. Ken's win left Mike Leroy clear for a sure second. Homer Hybarger (Homer-berg) was determined to push his Honda as far as he could. He kept first under such strict control, that the crowd cheering for him never had much to fear. Don Prather, who f1n1shed second, was not so sure of Homer's ab1l1ty, and after working througb the pack stead1ly gained and got a trophy for almost first (second). Warren Hutchinson capltal1zed on other rider's falls and breakdowns to get his 1st place trophy. He was closely followed by James Murdock and Larry Hicks, riding in fine form. Bob Foster, who worked hls way defty UP to second, seemed a cinch to win, but, alas, determination 15 not impervious to a bit too much throttle, and he dropped out. The 250cc Am-Ex. event evinced the best riding exhibition. All the riders, on almost equally fast machines, were smooth and m15takes were almost DU. Jlm FUckinger, f1awIess on hls Bultaco, casually stretched out a lead for first so that no one could knock him down like at hls most recent race. Doug Busey, Jlm's teammate, showed that he can track as well as MX by taking second. He, in turn, was pressured by the 1n1mltable Windy Foreman on a Yamaha. John Cunn1ng!lam led from the start to win the 360cc race. H15 closest competitor, John Montecell1, was forced out by a 'FlEIEIC'llE' from U.S.A. Barclay Trehal won the 500cc event on his Husky by such a large margin that he probably could have walked the last 1/2 mile and st1ll would have won. His super fast slides were under such perfect control that he seemed to be riding on ice. Jerry Hybarger eluded determination' but he just couldn't catch Barclay. CharUe Stewart sUd from start to f1n1sb in first place in the 650cc race. His tam1l1ar Triumph powered him from lock to lock, going in and coming out of each turn. Apparently he doesn't know how to let off on the throttle. John Lane and&tchHarveywerealsosmooth,~ unfortunately knew the track of shutting down for some of the corners. Thls race, efficient and well-organized, 15 evidence of the Traublazers work and plannlng. The MX coming UP July 19 will probably be just as SIIecesstul.
