~ ~BAST ~ :c: !oJ ..:J U G FAMILY·CAPTURES COSTA MESA By Mtke Capal1te COSTA MESA, July ,3 - Friday D1ght at Orange COlIIIty Fairgrounds was a night to remember for the speedway fans who attended. With the addItion of an exceptional amount of cushion (no doubt trying to get the track well-seasoned for the races dur1Dg the county fair in two weeks) the evening was spiced with spills all evening. With approximately 20 riders unloading during the evening, only Gus Lauer made the trip'to the hospit;1lin the ambulance, and it was announced later that he was OK. Orange County favorites R'ick Woods and Bill Cody had their turn at the prone position with Rick going down an unPrecedented two times with one of them being a spectacular overthe-bars crash that bent uP the machine so bad that he had to f1n1sh .the evening on his spare. The "Best Crash and 'Burn" award for the night w1l:l def1n1tely have to go to Steve Bast and stu Morley for their performance in the Scratch Main Event. As the gate went uP, the riders blasted into the first corner atfull throttle, when Steve backed his' throttle off for the corner, it didn't cooperate and he flew into the wall at full throttle. Poor Stu happened to be between Bast and the wall and was driven into the wall so hard that his machine almost cUmbed over it. Luck11y neither rider was injured and the race was restarted with both riders back in. This immediately brought 8.bout one of the biggest rubarbs from the stands that they have had yetat this oval. Just six races previous in the Scratch .Semi-Final, Mike Kanie and Jim Greshanl had tangled in the back chute in the first lap and went down, as they were ly1ng on the track, the race was blackflagged. When the race was restarted, although both riders were uP and ready to ride, they were barred from the race under the rule that "Any rider or riders who shall be the cause of the black flag shall be disqual1f1ed from the restart." When Steve and Stu hit the crash on the first lap, tile black flag was put out and the race stopped. On the restart, Steve and Stu were allowed in the race under the rule that "any time that half or more of the riders in any one race shall fall during the first lap, the race shall be restarted with all rider eUglble for the re-start" • This immediately brought a deaf1n1ng boo1Dg and jeering from the stands with some spectators actually getting uP and walIdng out at this apparent flagrant display offavorit1sm. Being positioned in the 1nf1eld, I am in contact with the off1c1als MAVRICK MOTOCROSS MODEL $32.00 pair Dealer Inqulrlls Invited Phone: (805) 824-4261 and would Uke to exp1a1n what happened. I must admit that I got a Utile hot at what seemed to be favoritism myself, but rather than stalk off angry, I asked the referee for an explanation. The simple matter is that he thought that Konle and Gresham had fallen on the second lap and was insistent unW informed by the scorekeeper that it was the first lap. 10 other words, the referee, being human had made a mistake, le.t those who have never made a mistake cast the first stone. 10 the Scratch Main restart, Mike Bast took the lead off the une, but brother Steve got aroUDd him to take over and hold it unW the f1n1sh with Mtke able to hold second ahead of Stu Morley and John Fishburn. Mike Bast was able to fare a Uttle better in the Handicap Maln as he worked his way through the pack to take the lead away from JimmyRaymond with two laps to go. Sonny Nutter was rid1Dg in top form as he worked his way up from a 50yard handicap to move into second spot before receiving the checkered flag leaving Raymond to setttle for third place. Nutter had some back luck in the Scratch heat as his clutch nut came loose wblle in the lead and he had to drop out. He repaired it in time for his match race with Steve Bast and proceeded to show Steve the way aroUDd the track for the win. In the second division Main Event, Jim Ashworth took the lead and was look1Dg real good when the heavY cushion got to him and he spWed in front of the pack, all the riders missed him, but· John Flanders went down afterveer1Dgtoward the wall to avoid Jim. This left the lead to Chuck Tidwell who stayed in front despite Ron Taylors repeated bids for that position. F1n1shlng behind them was Don Cullum and Chuck Hatcher.
