DeBennedetti Steals Show At Encinitas Moto-Cross By Bob Grant ENCINITAS, CALIF. July 5, 1970 - The Sagehoppers MC basted a large turnout d riders Sunday wUb Paul DeBennedettl stealing tI1e show. He started out in tI1e first race of tI1e day wben tbe Open Experts blasted off. TakIng tI1e lead on tI1e first lap DeBennedettlincreased his lead each lap. Scott King came in second witl1 Greg Sm1t11 on a CZ third. DeBennedettl duPlicated his ride in tI1e second and tbird motos, except in the tbird wben Smitl1 led for tI1e first lap. King's Montesa broke down in tbe second moto and Smitb swept into second place overall. Vic Hannon on a CZ rode to a consistent tbird place overall. In the 250 Expert class no one rider dominated as in the Open class. Curtis Smith on a CZ took the first 250 moto followed closely by Dave Smitb on an Ossa and CZ mounted Rob Norgaard. In the second moto C. Smith again took the lead and held it for two laps, when Brad Brown on a CZ took over and held on for the win. Dave Smitb took tbIrd. In tbe third moto Rob Norgaard took the lead on the first lap and continued on to win. Brown finished second with Dave Smith .- tbird and CurtIs Smitl1 fourtl1, aod tI1e overall winner. The 125 Expert class was dominated by tI1ree riders, Steve Stone on a Penton. David Rheaume on a Yamaha, aod Bultaco mounted Danny Mccarty. Rheaume went wire to wire in tI1e first moto followed very closely by McCarty aod Stone. In tI1e second aod third motos Stone went wire to wire witb Rheaume and McCarty swaPping secood and third. Stone was first overall followed by Rheaume and .tI1en McCarty as many tlmes tI1e tI1ree were wbeel to wbeel. After a brief intermission in wblch DeBennedettl took his fourth win of the day in an exhibition minibike race, the Novices took to the course. The Open Novice first divIsion was won by Husky rider Sheldon Schmit as he won all tI1ree motos. The second division Open was won by Don Mardon also on a Husky as he won the first two and coasted to a third place in the final moto. In the 250 Novice divIsion one CZ mounted Richard Norgaard won all thr.ee motos. In the second divIsion Paul Brinkman also on a CZ came out the overall winner by w1nn1ng the last two motos, after placing fourth in the first race. New Park In Ventura By Alex Arr VENTURA, CALIF., June 27,1970 - It appears that months of searcll1ng for a site for a county motorcycle park has brought officials to the area they wtll develop for thIs purpose. The undeveloped Tapa Canyon County Park is the answer that ¥entura County Parks Department otficfaJs have been seeking. Such a motorcycle park would become tI1e first such development anywhere. said, "The statistics show there are more than 4,500 motorcyclists locally wbo need a place to ride. We are well aware of the need. Now we are attempting to tind a feaSible means of meeting to the complalnIs of homeowners of motorcycles as a nuisance. Austin Cline, county parks director, said that action will be pushed to create such a rekreational area exclusively for motocycle enthusiasts. Tapo Canyon Park in nortl1east Simi Park is undeveloped. Cline and his staff have toured aod studied the possibillties here. They envIsion, "amotorcyclepark that would ut1l1ze some 50 to 60 acres of the 240 acres of the park.
