HOT ONE_ CLOSES PERRIS SEASON PERRIS, CALIF., July 5, 1970 - Hot weather usuallY makes for hot races, but the reverse was the case today as the heat not only stymied the riders' performances, but also "cooled" much of the enjoyment of the few fans on hand. The Open Expert finale was won by Dave Baker' who lived up to his last name and burned up the rest of the pack ROBERT STORMS BACK BRISTOL,ENGLAND-Joel Robert stormed back into the title hunt with a crushing double victory at the 250cc British Grand Prix where Sylvain Geboers, the championship leader, retired with a flat tire. It was the first time Geboers has failed to score in the 1970 world series. He retains his lead after eight of the twelve rounds. But Robert's fourth win (Geboers has three) could be the key to the outcome of the SUZuki duel it was reported in the British weekly Motor Cycle News. The best seven performances count for the FIM chamPionshiP. With four wins and a second, Robert can score twice more whlle Geboers surrenders points for lesser places. The name of the game Is to win! . The BeIg1an motocross kings and their Suzukis thrlIled a record 17,000 crowd at the Bristol club's classic at Dodington Park. Roger DeCoster, also from Belgium, was the hero who finlshed second. Without a works mechan1c, and without the grand prix CZ be returned to the factory in Czechoslovakia to be prepared for the British round, DeCoster raced a hack machine. He rode magnlflcently to beat Miroslav Halm, with works CZ and full support, into third place overall. Scandinavian stars Thorielf Hansen, Helkkl Mikkola and former world champion Torsten Hallman completed the top six. mounted on his CZ. Larry Burns (Hus) placed second and Maleo rider Bill Urban took third. A pair of CZ enthusiasts took the top two places in the 500cc Junior class when G. Hughes and J, He&.1y rode past the checkered flag 1-2 respectively. Bob Bland won the 250cc Junior class handlly on an Ossa whlIe T. Schafer and C. Rouse, both riding a CZ, occupied the next two positions. 10 the 125cc Ex-Int. division, Larry Pfutzenretuer paced his Bultaco to a first place finish and E. Crippa managed a second in a three-bike race. Ken Bowser of Fontana maneuvered his Yamaha to the winner's circle In the 125cc Jr. race whlle Steve Porter gained second. B. Haag (Bul) was victorious in the l00cc Jr, class. Mike Hoffman, who finished fourth in the 125cc moto, was one "heat" fatality, so-to- speak, as he pulletl into the pits after his race, dismounted and just passed-out. This incIdent showed how lucky the riders were as none succumbed to the heat'whlIe riding. (Results on page 22) Bi II Urban jumps into water hole. The through the water, not around as usual.
