Vegas Rally Attracts 1200 By Bill Harmer LAS VEGAS, NEV. June 13, 14- With the assistance of world famous entertainers and glittering gambling halls the Lucky Wheels Motorcycle Club of Orange County, Calif., played host to a crowd of some 1200 enthusiastic road riding cyclists at their 8th annual Las Vegas Rally. Riders began to arrive the evening of the 12th and all through the night the throating' roar of Harley 74" exhausts could be heard over the wirring and clicking of slot machines as the riders cruised the strip looking for lodging. Motel rooms were plentiful and for the most part reasonable and if the riders took advantage of the fine downtown camp grounds, it was by choice rather than necessity. Theoretically, Las Vegas is one of the most inexpensive' places in the world to have a fabulous weekend, but in fact, unfortunately, we, like nearly everyone else, added a few rolls of purchased nickels to the free ones, and watched the hungry slots gobble them UP. This is the reason the clubs offer so much free stuff; the weakness 'of human nature, but if you have a mountain of will power, you can do a lot of gambling on the free money and if the slots are looser than usual, you might bring a little extra home. There were no official events scheduled for Saturday except the sign-in and the dinner so everyone had plenty of time to seek their own brand of entertainment. ".- In sharp brown and gold unifonns, the large Las Vegas Knights M.e. was outstanding parade unit. The 35 member club is composed chiefly of black riders. JCS~eel-GraYes-Denius After the dinner dozens of trophies were ,awarded for the usual accomplishments: the longest distance mail-in registrant was Gary Aldee of Cooper's Mills, Maine, and he was there to pick uP his trophy. A ten year-old Long Beach youngster, Elmer Bonsky, was the proud winner of the youngest passenger award, and 17 year old Steve Mendes picked uP a trophy for the youngest licensed rider. The really unusual part of his feat was that he rode his stock 350cc Honda all the way from Norfolk, Virginia. The Golden West M.C. of Huntington Beach picked up, the longest distance club prize for coming 289 miles. An Anaheim couple, Charlene and Arley Talbot were judged the Best Dressed Out Rider Couple, and Cheryl Perrin of San Diego received the Best Dressed Out Rider Girl. Chris Wood of Henderson, Nevada was the Best Dressed Male Out Rider. The a ward' for the fattest man went to Cecil Walker of the Las Vegas Knights M.C. when Bill Miller of the District 37 Knights M.C. disqualified himself because he was one of the judges. Friends of "Pop" Sponsler were happy to see him get the Oldest Rider Award. A sliP of a girl~ Chencha Surlel really earned her trophy for the oldest bike by riding her old 80 cu. inch 1938 Harley DaVidson the 332 miles from San Diego, Calif. . This year two queens were chosen. One represented the younger girls. She was Mrs. Karen Hansen of Chula Vista,'The other girl who had to admit to being 35 to enter, was Brenda Johnson of The Las Vegas Police Department escorted the traditional motorcycle parade, which started at the Las Vegas Harley Shop on First St. and went North to Fremont, East on Fremont past the glittering down town Casinos, then North on Las Vegas BlVd. to the City Hall where Club and Bike judging was held. Many ,of the bikes in the parade were already packed and realy for the road, so at the terminus there were many farewells as old friends and new acquaintances parted until the next big Motorcycle Rally. The Big Bike Experts again won hands d,own as having the most exciting racing of the night. In the fir st heat Andy Skeel grabbed the lead off the line with Tony Denius and Vince Graves right on him. After a pretty hairy first lap Andy pulled away and let Vince and Tony battle, it out for second and third. The second moto was pretty much the same with Andy again take first. The third moto was black-flagged and on the new start Andy got to do it backwards thus making it necessary for him to work his way through the pack while Vince got the drive and pulled away and Tony again got stuck with all the hassling. It was Vince, Tony and Andy in this one. Andy still had enough to take first with Vince second and Tony third. Mike DuBont brought his Kawasaki home for the win in the 50100cc NoVice Class with Skip Gallagher on his Honda 50 and no handicap start holding in there for second. Tony Arndt led the second Division 100cc NoVices, and Bob Farmer was the big winner in the third Division 100cc NoVices. phil McDonald sewed up first place easily in the 125cc NoVice Class and left the hattling to second place B.J. Hayden. He successfully held off the attacks of Erik Strom mer and Frank Robertson who were third and fourth. DaVid Caldwell was the big winner in the 125-175cc Amateur-Expert Class. Smitty Smith was second and Bobby Butt and Ron Lambert were third and fourth. r----~----.
