,HARRIS RANCH SCRAMBLES TO By Arnold Katz HOLLISTER, CALIF. June 14, 1970 - A windy, ch111y day tound 281 riders competing in a 16 race scrambles sponsored by the HoUster M.e. The event was beld on a serpentine 1/2 mile TT track l0cated on the Harris Ranch, a tew miles SW of HolUster, Caut. The track itself was hairy, allowing Utile leeway for mistakes, and demanding smooth, head-uP charging it one ellPllCted to win. There were mlUlf opportun1tles to get in over one's bead, and those riders that did SOOQ tound themselves separated from their machtnes, and sl1d1ng along the bard pack with only their leathers for protectlon. The day started with practlce and a long series of trials. Then came the Mains. The first was the l00cc event, and at the drop of the flag, two hikes coWded dashing tor the pole and the race was immediately stopPed and restarted. Again the Uttle 2-jle.ngers were ott ute a swarm of hornets. Mike Menes1n1, rtding a l00cc Kawasaki started puUtng away trom the pack in lap three and was never headed. The 125cc class and 175cc Novice class brought relatively easy wins tor Doug Searson (125cc Yamaha) and Corey Mtcchte (175cc Honda), with some ttg!it dicing picking uP again in the 175cc Amateur race. Wb11e BUl Vanderlaan (Montesa-mounted) pulled away from the pack, Aaron Asman (Yam) and Mike Tracy looked as it lhey were wired together and actually came through the ba1rPin side by side on three occasions. Asman took second, only to be d1squa11t1ed wilen It was learned that the Yamaha be was r1d1Dg was not the Br1dgestone be entered to ride. B11l Bourgeors, in w1nn1ng the 250cc Amateur race aboard a Bultaco, moves into the ElIP8rt class. He held a sUgbt lead from the starting wire only to be passed on the beg1nn1Dg of the last lap. However, as the new *1 bike entered that notorious banked turn at the end of the stra1ght he lost it and Bourgeors went on to h1s win. In the 250cc Expert class, much of the dicing took place back in the pack, as Jim Foley rode h1s Rich ScheUe Bultaco to a wire to wire win. His team mate, Derek Olsen, bad a barder tlme of it as he needed 9 laps, (of the scheduled 10), to pass Mike Renslow. Derek got by at the jump and barely stayed ahead tor the t1ntsh. Incidentally, this was the first of 2 trophies collected by Foley, as bealso took a second in the 500cc Expert class lift ·aC,cle PORTABLE CYCLE $16.95 WORKSTAND TIlE IIANDLE DOES TIlE LIFTING 3 models available - use at bome. bills.
