.... .... Nichols Continues To Win At Orange County Track Story and Photos by Rich Hottman ORANGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY, June 17, 1970 - Steve Nichols (Yam) contiDued the domtnatlon of the T.T. & Short Track, winning 3 of the 12 malns. Steve seems almost unbeatable, with main event wins In the 125 Sr. T.T., 250 Sr. T.T. and 125 Sr. short track. The 250Cc Sr. short track was won by Scott Autrey (Yam), but not without a "battle royal" with Gary Scott (Bul), Charles Gann (Bul) and Jim Peterson (Ossa). They had the crowd on their feet for the whole race. The 250Cc Jr. short track was another action f11led race. with Greg Wlckam (Bul) tak1ng the checkered flag. Randy Riggs (Mon); who.had been plagued with mechanical problems for 3 weeks In succession, f1na1ly got it together to take the second place trophy. Ph1l McDonald (Yam) and Morris Malone (AJS), both 14 year olds, had the crowd cheer.1ng, as both of these youngsters, although small In size, can really handle their bikes. Both Ph1l and Morris are consistent trophy winners In their events. If a team trophy had been awarded, K & N Yamaha, Riverside, would surely have taken first place, with 6 main event wins, 4 seconds and 1 third. Not only do they have the big winners, but the depth as well. Greg Wlckam (Bul) and Scott Smith (Yam), both went home with a special trophy presented by Suzuk1 Fun Wheels, Laguna Niguel, for their fine efforts In their 250Cc Jr. events. With a small, tight track llke O.C.S., there are always a few pileuPS In the corners, and at times the track looked more llke a football fleld thaJi a race track. Although there were several crashes, no one was seriously Injured and for the 3rd week In succession the ambulance reamlned stationary. The pit area has been moved from Inside the track to just outslde the south wall. ThIs change has been benef1clal to both riders and spectators, giving everyone a much better view of the entire track. It also has e11mtnated some of the confusion In the plts, that have been obvious prior to th1s week's race. (Results on page 22) .~ os Cl..
